Chapter 18 - THE LAST MESSAGE

Five years after I first took control of Blackwood, I received one final message from Victor Sloan.
He was still serving his sentence.
The message was delivered through his attorney.
Evelyn,
I heard what you did with the company.
I never expected it.
I thought your compassion was weakness.
I was wrong.
I almost ignored it.
Then I read the final paragraph.
Clara once told me you were different from the rest of the family.
I didn't believe her.
She said you would eventually choose people over power.
She was right.
I folded the letter.
Maya looked at me.
“What did Victor want?”
“Nothing.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“He just wanted you to know Clara was right.”
I smiled.
“That sounds like Clara.”
That evening, I returned to her grave.
I hadn't visited in months.
The cemetery was quiet.
Autumn leaves covered the ground.
I placed flowers beside the stone.
“I did it.”
The wind moved gently through the trees.
“The company survived.”
“The employees are protected.”
“Daniel is gone.”
“Patricia is gone.”
“Victor is in prison.”
“And nobody controls me anymore.”
I smiled.
“You would have liked that.”
I sat for a while.
Then I whispered:
“I finally understand what you were trying to teach me.”
I had spent my life believing people needed protection from losing money.
Clara believed people needed protection from losing themselves.
She was right.
A company could be rebuilt.
Money could be recovered.
Property could be replaced.
But dignity was different.
Once destroyed, it took years to rebuild.
That was why the company had changed.
That was why I had changed.
I stood.
“I miss you.”
Then I walked away.
May you like
For the first time, visiting her grave didn't feel like saying goodbye.
It felt like saying thank you.
