Chapter 13 - THE ACCOUNT I NEVER KNEW EXISTED

The bank account had existed in my name for eleven years.

I had never opened it.

Never deposited money.

Never withdrawn anything.

Yet three million dollars had passed through it.

The account had been established using an identity document I did not recognize.

Maya stared at the records.

“This is sophisticated.”

“Can it be traced?”

“Eventually.”

“Do it.”

Arthur Sterling arrived.

When he saw the account information, he went pale.

“I knew Clara had a contingency.”

“But not this.”

I looked at him.

“What is it?”

He took a deep breath.

“Clara believed someone would eventually try to destroy Blackwood.”

“She created a personal protection fund.”

“For me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you were the one person she trusted completely.”

I frowned.

“You mean she expected the family to attack me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't she tell me?”

“Because you would have refused.”

He was right.

I probably would have.

Clara knew me too well.

The account had been designed to finance my legal defense if the Blackwoods ever tried to remove me.

It had existed quietly.

Unused.

Waiting.

And then Daniel's actions had activated it.

The money had never been intended to enrich me.

It was protection.

Again.

Clara had been building protection around me for years.

I thought about everything I had misunderstood.

The locked cabinet.

The secret meetings.

The quiet investment.

Her warnings.

She had known.

She had seen something coming.

And I had married the man at the center of it.

The realization hurt.

But there was something else.

The bank records showed one unusual transfer.

Three million dollars.

Then two years later:

Five million.

Then another:

Seven million.

The account had grown.

Not because I had touched it.

Because Clara had invested it.

The balance was now more than fifteen million.

Arthur stared.

“She built this for you.”

I looked at the screen.

“Why?”

“Because she knew your greatest weakness.”

“What?”

“You care about everyone.”

He smiled faintly.

“That can be dangerous.”

“It is.”

“But it is also why she trusted you.”

I decided to use the account.

Not for myself.

I created a legal fund for employees affected by the pension theft.

Workers who could not afford lawyers.

Families facing financial hardship.

Retired employees who had lost years of savings.

The fund became known as the Clara Protection Fund.

At the opening ceremony, I stood before hundreds of workers.

“My aunt believed money should provide security, not control.”

“She was right.”

“The Blackwood family forgot that.”

“I will not.”

The room applauded.

I looked toward the factory.

The place was running again.

Production had increased.

New equipment had arrived.

Workers had ownership.

The company was stronger than it had ever been.

Then I received another call.

It was from the district attorney.

“Mrs. Vance.”

“Yes?”

“We have a problem.”

“What problem?”

“Daniel is seeking to reopen the fraud case.”

My heart sank.

“Why?”

“He claims new evidence proves the audit was compromised.”

I almost laughed.

“That's impossible.”

“The judge will review it tomorrow.”

“Who submitted it?”

There was a pause.

“Victor Sloan's attorneys.”

I felt cold.

“Victor is in prison.”

“Yes.”

“Then someone is still working for him.”

The district attorney lowered his voice.

“We think so.”

I looked toward the factory.

Someone was still trying to destroy everything Clara had built.

May you like

And I knew exactly what I had to do.

I was going back to court.
