Chapter 9 - Total Reclamation

Six months passed, filled with the sweet, frantic rhythm of newborn life. Leo grew into a happy, chubby baby with dimples and a booming laugh, while Pearl blossomed in her new school, excelling in art and making a circle of wonderful friends.
One sunny Saturday, we held a second baby shower—or rather, a "Welcome to the World" party for Leo—in the backyard of our new home.
This time, the yard was filled with genuine love. My mother was there, along with my closest friends, supportive neighbors, and Emmett's uncle, who had long since cut ties with Petra due to her toxicity. There were no hidden motives, no whispered insults, and no dark clouds hovering over the lawn.
During the party, my friend Genevieve walked up to me with a glass of lemonade. "How are things on the other front?" she asked quietly.
I took a sip and smiled. "Quiet. Exactly how we like it."
Through the grapevine, we had learned that Sabrina’s divorce had finalized. She had been forced to surrender the heirloom ring, lost her luxury house, and was now living in a small apartment, paying hefty legal fees. Petra was largely isolated, her reputation as a matriarch thoroughly shattered after the truth of how she treated her step-granddaughter became public knowledge.
They had tried sending birthday cards to Pearl and Christmas gifts for Leo, but Emmett returned every single package unopened to sender. He didn't do it out of malice, but out of absolute, unshakeable boundaries. He had chosen his true family, and he never wavered again.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden hue across our garden, Emmett stood up to give a brief toast.
He raised his glass to the crowd, his arm wrapped firmly around my waist.

"I want to thank everyone here for showing us what real family looks like," Emmett said, his voice clear and resonant. "Family isn't about blood or enabling bad behavior. It's about love, respect, and standing up for the people you love, even when it's hard. I am the luckiest man alive to have Nora, Pearl, and Leo."
The guests cheered and clinked their glasses together in warm celebration.
