Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Over the next two weeks, the fallout from the baby shower exploded across Emmett’s family like a slow-motion grenade.
Grady filed for divorce three days after the shower. It turned out the diamond ring wasn't just any ring—it was an heirloom from Grady’s grandmother that Sabrina had taken from their home safe without his permission, specifically to use as a prop in her twisted game. Grady had reached his absolute limit with her narcissism and deceit.
Meanwhile, news of the video leaked to the rest of the extended family and community. The guests who attended the shower were appalled by what they had witnessed. Petra’s social circle began quietly snubbing her, disgusted by her willingness to brand a child a thief.
Instead of taking accountability, Sabrina and Petra dug in their heels. They blamed me for "ruining" Sabrina’s marriage and destroying the family's reputation by keeping the recording.
Emmett was caught in the crossfire, completely miserable. He came to my mother's house several times, bringing flowers, baby supplies, and tearful apologies, but I remained firm. I allowed him supervised visits with Pearl in the park, but I refused to return to our shared house.
One afternoon, while Pearl was at school, I agreed to meet Emmett at a quiet diner to discuss our living arrangements and the pending birth of our baby boy.
Emmett looked exhausted. Dark circles hung under his eyes, and he had lost weight.
"My mom wants us to have a family meeting," Emmett said carefully, pushing his food around his plate. "She thinks if you delete the video and issue a statement to the family saying it was all a big misunderstanding, Grady might take Sabrina back."
I put my fork down and stared at him in disbelief. "Are you serious?"
"I told her no!" Emmett quickly added, waving his hands nervously. "I told her that was crazy! But... Nora, Sabrina is in a really bad place right now. She’s losing her husband, her home..."
"Sabrina made her bed, Emmett," I said firmly. "She attempted to frame a child. She committed a cruel, calculated act of malice. The fact that you are even sitting here telling me about her problems shows me you still don't get it."
"I do get it!" Emmett insisted. "I’ve been standing up to them! I told my mother she was wrong!"
"Did you?" I challenged. "Or did you just nod along until you got in the car to come see me? Emmett, you are addicted to being the good guy, but by trying to please everyone, you failed the people who actually needed you."
Emmett covered his face with his hands. "I don't know how to fix this, Nora. I don't want to lose you. I don't want to lose my daughter and my son."
May you like
"Then you need to decide who your family actually is," I said gently, but with absolute clarity. "Because right now, you are acting like Petra's son and Sabrina's brother, not my husband and Pearl's father. Until you figure out where your loyalty lies, we cannot be together."
I stood up, placed cash on the table to cover my meal, and walked out, leaving Emmett alone with his choices.
