Chapter 6 - The Long Road to Healing

Emmett stood in the hallway, his shoulders heaving as he caught his breath. The rage that had filled him seconds ago seemed to evaporate, leaving behind a man completely shattered by his own long-overdue epiphany.

He slowly turned around and looked up the stairs at me, then at Pearl, who was peeking out from behind my skirts.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, tears breaking down his face. "I'm so, so sorry it took me this long to see it."

My mother looked at Emmett, her expression softening slightly. She silently walked into the kitchen, giving us space.

I walked down the stairs slowly and met Emmett in the living room. Pearl stayed at the top of the stairs, watching cautiously.

"I called a lawyer yesterday," Emmett said, his voice cracking. "I'm cutting off my mother and sister completely. I handed over my full statement to Grady's legal team confirming what Sabrina did. I'm putting the house up for sale so we can move far away from them, somewhere near your mother. And I signed up for individual therapy. I start on Thursday."

I looked at him, seeing for the first time the man I had actually married—not the obedient son hiding under Petra's thumb, but a man willing to burn down his comfortable life to protect his real family.

"That's a good start, Emmett," I said gently. "But trust isn't rebuilt in a single afternoon."

"I know," he choked out, wiping his eyes. "I don't expect you to come home today. I don't expect you to forgive me right away. I just want the chance to prove to you and Pearl that I can be the husband and father you deserve."

Pearl slowly crept down the stairs, step by step, holding her bunny. She stopped at the bottom and looked at Emmett.

"Are you mad at us, Daddy?" she asked softly.

Emmett sank to his knees on the rug, tears flowing freely. "Oh, Pearl... baby, no. I could never be mad at you. I was bad. I didn't protect you when I should have, and I am so, so sorry. You are my sweet girl, and I love you more than anything in the world."

Pearl looked at him for a long moment, then walked over and wrapped her small arms around his neck. Emmett pulled her into a tight, trembling embrace, burying his face in her hair as he wept tears of genuine repentance.

Watching them, the heavy lump of bitterness in my chest finally began to melt. There was a long road ahead, but for the first time in months, I saw a path forward.
