Chapter 5 - The Turning Point

The stress of the situation began to take a toll on my pregnancy. At my six-month checkup, my doctor noted that my blood pressure was elevated and strongly recommended strict bed rest and minimal stress.

My mother took over everything. She managed the house, drove Pearl to school, and made sure I was comfortable. Pearl, bless her sweet heart, became my little caretaker, bringing me glasses of water and drawing colorful pictures to tape onto my bedroom wall.

Emmett tried to visit, but my mother kept him at arms-length, only letting him stay for short, quiet visits.

One Tuesday evening, the doorbell rang aggressively. Before my mother could reach the door, it flew open. Petra and Sabrina pushed their way into the foyer.

Sabrina looked frantic, her hair disheveled and eyes wide. "Where is she?" she demanded loudly. "Where is Nora?"

My mother stepped into the hallway, her posture like iron. "Get out of my house before I call the police."

"I am not leaving until she deletes that video!" Sabrina screamed. "Grady’s lawyer is using it in the divorce proceedings! He's claiming I'm mentally unstable and trying to take half our assets! Nora ruined my life!"

I slowly walked out of the master bedroom, holding my pregnant belly, and stood at the top of the stairs. Pearl peeked out from behind my bedroom door, trembling.

"You ruined your own life, Sabrina," I said, my voice cold and steady.

"You snuck around with a phone like a coward!" Sabrina spat, taking a step toward the stairs. "You’ve always thought you were better than us! You brought your bastard child into our family and expected us to treat her like royalty!"

The moment those words left Sabrina’s mouth, a loud voice bellowed from the front doorway.

"THAT IS ENOUGH!"

Emmett stood in the doorway, panting, having just run up the driveway. He had seen his mother’s car outside and rushed in. His face was flushed with a rage I had never seen in him before.

He stepped between Sabrina and the staircase, turning his back on us to face his sister and mother.

"Out," Emmett growled, his voice trembling with sheer indignation.

"Emmett, darling—" Petra began, putting a hand on his arm.

"DON'T TOUCH ME, MOM!" Emmett roared, shaking her off so violently that Petra stepped back in shock. "I have listened to you two poison everything in my life for years! I let you pick at my wife, I let you bully a helpless seven-year-old child, and I sat there like a coward because I was afraid of making you angry!"

"Emmett, we are your blood!" Sabrina yelled.

"You are toxic!" Emmett fired back, his eyes blaring. "You framed a child, Sabrina! You tried to ruin a little girl's life out of petty jealousy! And Mom, you cheered her on! You are both sick, and I am disgusted that I ever defended either of you!"

"Emmett..." Petra stammered, pale with shock. She had never heard her son speak with such fiery authority.

"If either of you ever come near my wife, my daughter, or my unborn son again, I will personally file a restraining order," Emmett said, stepping right into Sabrina’s face. "Get out of this house. Right now."

May you like

Sabrina opened her mouth to argue, but looking into her brother's blazing eyes, she realized the golden boy was gone. She turned on her heel and stormed out, sobbing hysterically. Petra lingered for a moment, looking at Emmett with hurt and disbelief, before quietly following her daughter out the door.

The door slammed shut. The house fell dead silent.
