Chapter 7 - JUSTICE AND REDEMPTION
Two months later, the high-profile trial of Derek Patterson and Richard Vance commenced at the Municipal Grand Courthouse downtown. The media called it the trial of the year—a dramatic exposure of corporate corruption, extortion, and child cruelty.
James sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in an immaculate dark suit, flanked by his legal team and personal security. Beside him sat Rachel, dignified and beautiful in an elegant navy dress, holding his hand tightly.
Derek Patterson, dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit and heavy wrist shackles, sat at the defense table looking small, defeated, and terrified. His former bluster and aggressive cruelty had completely evaporated under the overwhelming weight of physical evidence, police wiretaps, and expert medical testimony.
Beside him sat Richard Vance, the disgraced former executive, facing dozens of federal counts of wire fraud, criminal intimidation, and corporate embezzlement.
When the prosecution called its key witness, the courtroom fell into complete, breathless silence.
Chloe stepped up to the witness stand, accompanied by a court advocate. She looked small in the large wooden witness box, but her eyes were steady, clear, and filled with remarkable courage.
The prosecutor asked her gentle questions about the night of the incident.
Chloe pointed her small finger directly at Derek Patterson.
“He hid my baby brother’s milk,” Chloe said, her clear young voice echoing off the high marble walls of the courtroom. “He made me eat cold, bad food. He grabbed my arm and hurt me because I wanted to save Tyler. But my mom gave me a secret number. I called it. And my dad came and saved us.”
Derek hung his head in absolute shame, unable to meet the brave gaze of the eight-year-old girl he had once terrorized.
The jury deliberated for less than thirty minutes.
The judge handed down the maximum sentences permitted by law: Derek Patterson was sentenced to twenty-two years in state prison without the possibility of parole. Richard Vance was sentenced to thirty years in federal penitentiary, alongside full asset forfeiture that stripped him of every penny he possessed.
