Chapter 3 - SHATTERED TRUTHS

The emergency room at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital was bright, clean, and smelled of antiseptic and fresh linen—a world away from the suffocating darkness of Cedar Street. Police officers stood guard at the double glass doors of the private waiting suite, acting under strict orders from Chief Miller himself.

Inside the room, Tyler was resting in a stainless-steel crib. He was dressed in a soft, brand-new yellow onesie that James’s assistant had rushed to purchase from a high-end baby boutique down the street, along with three cases of premium organic infant formula. The baby was finally full, his small stomach rounded, sleeping peacefully with one thumb tucked into his mouth.

Chloe sat on the edge of a plush leather examination table, eating a warm bowl of soup provided by the hospital staff. Her little hands were wrapped tightly around the spoon, but every few seconds her eyes would dart toward James, as if worried he might vanish if she looked away for too long.

James sat in a chair beside her, a gentle smile on his face. He had taken off his wet suit jacket and rolled up his shirt sleeves. In his hands, he held a warm damp cloth, carefully wiping clean the smudges of dirt from Chloe’s tiny fingers.

“Does your wrist still hurt, Chloe?” he asked softly, looking at the ice pack resting on her lap.

“A little,” she said in a small voice. “But the nurse put a pink bandage on it. Pink is my favorite color.”

“It suits you,” James said softly. He hesitated, looking down at the sleeping infant in the crib, then back at her. “Chloe... can you tell me about your mother? How long has Derek been staying with you?”

Chloe swallowed her soup and looked down at her shoes. “A few months. Mom met him at the diner. He said he had a job, but then he lost it. He started staying at our place all the time. He didn't like Tyler crying. And he said I took up too much space and ate too much.”

James’s jaw clenched tightly, a dangerous anger flaring deep in his chest against Derek Patterson, but he kept his voice completely gentle for Chloe. “And your mother? Why didn't she stop him?”

“Mom tries,” Chloe whispered, tears brimming in her eyes. “She works so hard, James. She works at the diner in the morning and cleans offices at night. She cries in the bathroom when she thinks I’m asleep. She told Derek to leave last week, but he threatened her. He said if she called the police, he would tell child services that she was an unfit mother and they would take Tyler and me away forever.”

James felt a wave of profound sorrow wash over him. Rachel had been terrified, isolated, and backed into a corner by a predatory monster, working herself to the bone just to keep a roof over her children’s heads. And in her desperation, she had preserved that ten-digit phone number, guarding it like a sacred lifeline, waiting for the moment of absolute emergency.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the private suite flew open.

Rachel Matthews burst into the room, her eyes wild with terror, her hair damp with rain, wearing her stained diner uniform and a worn coat. She was trembling frantically, clutching her purse to her chest.

“Chloe! Tyler!” she gasped, her voice breaking.

“Mommy!” Chloe scrambled off the examination table and ran into her mother’s open arms.

Rachel dropped to her knees, sobbing violently as she pressed her face into Chloe’s hair, kissing her cheeks, her forehead, hands frantically checking her daughter’s arms and legs for injuries. “Oh God, baby! I got the call from the police at the diner—they told me Derek was arrested—are you hurt? Where is Tyler? Is he okay?”

“He’s okay, Mommy. He’s sleeping,” Chloe whispered, pointing to the crib. “He got a full bottle. The nice man bought it for him.”

Rachel froze. She slowly lifted her head, her gaze following Chloe’s pointing finger past the crib, up to the tall figure standing quietly near the window.

When her eyes met James’s, the breath completely left her body.

“James...” she breathed, her face turning pale as paper. “How... how are you here?”

James stood motionless, staring at the woman he had loved and lost, seeing the deep dark circles under her eyes, the thinness of her frame, and the sheer exhaustion etched into her beautiful face.

“Chloe called me, Rachel,” James said softly. “She used the number you hid behind the phone.”

Rachel gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as she looked down at her daughter in absolute shock. “Chloe... you dialed that number?”

“Derek hid Tyler’s milk, Mommy,” Chloe explained, clinging to her mother’s apron. “Tyler was shaking. I was scared. You said that number was for someone you might need one day. I thought we needed him today.”

Rachel pulled Chloe tightly into her chest, tears raining down her cheeks. “Oh, baby... oh, my sweet girl...”

James walked slowly across the room, standing a few feet away from them. His heart felt heavy, burdened with a thousand unanswered questions, but above all, filled with a protective instinct he had never experienced before.

“Why didn't you call me, Rachel?” James asked, his voice thick with emotion. “When you left fourteen months ago... when you found out you were pregnant... why didn't you come to me? Why did you endure all of this alone?”

Rachel looked up at him, her lips trembling as she stood up, keeping Chloe behind her back defensively, though her eyes were filled with profound guilt and heartbreak.

“Because your former partner, Richard Vance, showed up at my apartment the day after you proposed to me,” Rachel cried softly. “He showed me documents... he told me I was a distraction that would ruin your company’s public merger. He said if I didn’t disappear, he would make sure you lost everything you had worked your whole life to build. And then... when I found out I was pregnant with Tyler... I was too ashamed to go back. I thought you had moved on. I thought I was protecting you!”

James felt as if a physical blade had been driven into his chest. Richard Vance—his former chief legal counsel—had orchestrated Rachel’s disappearance to protect his own corrupt interests in the company. James had fired Richard eight months ago for embezzlement, never knowing the full extent of the man’s evil machinations.

“He lied to you, Rachel,” James said, taking a step closer, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “He lied to you about everything. I never stopped looking for you. Not for a single day. I didn't care about the merger. I didn't care about the company. I only cared about you.”

He turned his head toward the steel crib where the baby slept peacefully, then looked back at Rachel.

“He’s my son, isn't he?” James asked softly.

May you like

Rachel wiped her tears with the back of her worn sleeve and looked at James with complete honesty. She gave a small, trembling nod.

“His full name is Tyler James Matthews,” Rachel whispered. “Yes, James. He’s your son.”
