Chapter 4 - THE SANCTUARY

By 2:00 AM, the hospital had completed all medical checks. Chloe had minor bruising on her arm, and Tyler was declared healthy despite mild dehydration, which had been fully addressed with fluids and proper nourishment. The doctors cleared them to be discharged.
As they walked out of the hospital’s private rear exit, rain was still falling gently over the city. A fleet of three dark luxury sedans waited under the covered portico, engines idling smoothly.
Rachel stopped at the glass doors, holding Tyler wrapped in a thick blanket, looking anxiously at the rain. “I... I need to get our things from the apartment. And I need to figure out where we’re going to sleep tonight. The police said Cedar Street is a crime scene now.”
James stepped between her and the rain, holding a massive black umbrella over her and the children.
“You are never setting foot in that apartment again, Rachel,” James said firmly but gently. “My security team is already clearing out your personal belongings, clothes, and childhood keepsakes. Everything else in that place can burn for all I care.”
“James, I can’t accept—”
“You can, and you will,” James interrupted smoothly, opening the door of his flagship Maybach sedan. “Tonight, you and the children are coming home with me. To the estate in Crestview. It’s secure, warm, and safe. Tomorrow we will figure out the rest.”
Rachel looked into his eyes and saw no hesitation, no judgment—only an unyielding wall of protection. Exhaustion finally broke her remaining pride. She nodded silently and climbed into the plush leather interior of the vehicle with Tyler.
James lifted Chloe up into the seat beside her mother, buckling her seatbelt carefully. Chloe looked wide-eyed at the wooden paneling, the soft ambient lighting, and the starry ceiling display inside the vehicle.
“It looks like a spaceship,” Chloe whispered in awe.
James smiled softly, ruffling her hair. “It’s just a car, Chloe. But tonight, it’s taking you to a place where no one can ever hurt you again.”
Twenty minutes later, the heavy iron gates of the McKenzie Estate swung open silently. The vehicle rolled down a long, winding driveway lined with ancient oak trees, approaching a magnificent three-story stone manor illuminated by warm, welcoming golden lights.
When the doors opened, James’s head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable—a warm, grandmotherly woman with grey hair and a motherly smile—was already waiting at the front doors, accompanied by two maids carrying warm towels and trays of hot cocoa and fresh pastries.
“Welcome home, Mr. McKenzie,” Mrs. Gable said, before turning her eyes to Rachel and the kids with immense warmth. “Oh, bless your hearts! Come inside out of the cold!”
Chloe gasped as she stepped into the grand foyer. The floor was made of polished white marble, a sweeping double staircase stretched upward to a crystal chandelier, and a roaring fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace in the living room, filling the space with the scent of cedar and warmth.
For a girl who had spent her life in cramped, cold apartments with flickering fluorescent tubes, the estate felt like a fairytale castle.
“Mrs. Gable,” James instructed as he removed his coat. “Please prepare the East Wing master suite for Rachel and the nursery right next to it for Tyler. And prepare the garden room for Chloe.”
“Everything was prepared the moment Marcus called ahead, sir,” Mrs. Gable replied softly. “The baths are drawn, fresh clothes are set out, and the kitchen has prepared soft meals.”
Rachel stood in the center of the warm foyer, carrying Tyler, looking around with tears welling in her eyes again. She felt overwhelmed, humbled, and deeply emotional. She looked at James, who was standing nearby, watching her with deep tenderness.
“James... I don don’t know what to say,” Rachel choked out, her voice trembling. “After everything... after I ran away...”
James stepped closer, gently taking Tyler from her arms so her tired muscles could rest. He cradled his small son against his chest, feeling the soft rhythm of the baby’s breathing, before looking up into Rachel’s eyes.
“You don’t have to say anything tonight, Rachel,” James said gently. “You are safe. Our children are safe. That is the only thing that matters in this world.”
An hour later, the estate was quiet.
Tyler was fast asleep in a wooden crib in the nursery, surrounded by soft plush toys and wrapped in cashmere blankets. Rachel had taken a warm bath and was resting in her spacious bedroom, exhausted body finally surrendering to sleep.
James walked down the dimly lit hallway of the East Wing and pushed open the door to Chloe’s bedroom.
The small girl was sitting on a massive canopy bed, wearing a soft pair of white cotton pajamas. She wasn't sleeping. She was staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the rain falling on the estate grounds outside.
James tapped gently on the open door. “Knock, knock. Mind if I come in?”
Chloe looked up and shook her head. James walked over and sat down on the edge of the large mattress.
“You should be asleep, little one. It’s very late.”
“I’m scared,” Chloe whispered, clutching the silk duvet to her chest. “I’m scared that if I close my eyes and wake up tomorrow, I’ll be back in the kitchen on Cedar Street. And Derek will be there. And it was all just a dream.”
James’s heart hurt for her. He reached out and gently took her small hand in his, holding it firmly.
“Look at me, Chloe,” James said, his voice absolute and unshakeable. “I give you my word as a man: you will never go back to Cedar Street. Derek Patterson is in prison, and he will stay there for a very, very long time. This is real. You are safe. Your mother is safe. And Tyler is safe.”
Chloe looked at his face, finding a sense of complete security she had never known in her eight years of life. “Are you really my daddy’s friend?”
May you like
James paused, a warm, emotional smile spreading across his lips. “I’m Tyler’s daddy, Chloe. But if you will let me... I would be honored to be your daddy, too.”
Chloe stared at him for a long moment. Then, she leaned forward, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. James wrapped his large arms around her small frame, holding her close, comforting her until her breathing slowed and she finally fell fast asleep in his arms.
