Chapter 18 - The FormAt fourteen, Dylan received a permission form for a school leadership retreat.

Different provider.

Different teacher.

Mark placed it on the kitchen table.

“Want to go?”

Dylan read everything.

Price.

Dates.

Activities.

Cancellation terms.

He looked at Mark.

“You need help that week?”

“My shoulder works now.”

“Mostly.”

“Rude.”

Dylan smiled.

Then:

“I think I want to go.”

Mark’s chest tightened.

“You sure?”

“Don’t do that.”

“What?”

“Make me defend yes.”

Mark stopped.

He had been making Dylan defend no for years without realizing.

Now he was accidentally making him defend yes.

“Okay.”

Dylan signed the student section.

Mark signed the parent section.

No fear.

No ruler.

No grade threat.

Just consent.

That form stayed on the refrigerator until departure.

Not as a symbol.

Because Mark forgot to mail it for three days.

Normal family chaos.
