“Did you strike Dylan Parker?”
“Yes.”
“Three times?”
“Yes.”
“Did he tell you his father was injured?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell him he still had to sign and pay?”
“Yes.”
“Was camp mandatory?”
“No.”
“Could you fail him for refusing?”
“No.”
Silence.
“Then why threaten that?”
Mrs. Carter looked at the table.
“I wanted him to understand the seriousness of commitment.”
“By making a false threat?”
Her jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“Why was his signature so important?”
Long pause.
“Because I believed families had stopped respecting shared obligations.”
Then:
“And because I needed enrollment.”
“Why?”
She exhaled.
“My leadership review.”
“Anything else?”
“My husband’s business.”
There.
Not excuse.
Admission.
“I told myself the program was good for students.”
“Was that true?”
“Yes.”
“Does that justify hitting Dylan?”
“No.”
First clean boundary.
The district terminated her employment.
