Mr. Grant taught.
No ruler on the desk.
Dylan noticed anyway.
First assignment:
summer reading choice.
Three books.
Optional fourth.
The word optional made his stomach tighten.
Mr. Grant explained:
“You can choose one.”
Dylan raised his hand.
“What happens if we don’t choose the fourth?”
Mr. Grant looked confused.
“Nothing.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
A few students laughed.
Mr. Grant stopped them.
Then looked at Dylan.
“Optional means optional.”
The sentence hit harder than expected.
Dylan looked down.
For weeks he asked teachers to clarify every optional activity.
Field day?
Optional.
Leadership club?
Optional.
Fundraiser?
Optional.
He was rebuilding language.
