Bernard cooperated.
Lost his license.
Avoided prison on the most serious charges through a plea.
Anna met him once.
He looked twenty years older.
“I failed you.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid.”
“I believe you.”
He seemed surprised.
She continued:
“Fear explains why you failed.”
Then:
“It does not turn the failure into protection.”
Bernard nodded.
That conversation changed how Anna ran Halcyon.
Whistleblowers gained direct access to outside counsel.
No executive could select the lawyer investigating that executive.
Emergency reporting bypassed management.
People called the reforms excessive.
