Chapter 5 - The Man Who Refused to Become a Witness“Julian.”

Anna stepped forward.
He pressed the gun beneath his chin.
“Stay back.”
Mara stopped.
Jonah did too.
Federal sirens approached.
Julian laughed softly.
“You think they want truth?”
Anna said nothing.
“They want headlines.”
“Put it down.”
“They’ll turn you against me.”
“You did that yourself.”
His face tightened.
Anna continued.
“I loved you.”
That hurt to say.
Julian’s eyes filled.
“You still do.”
“Part of me.”
Mara looked toward Anna but said nothing.
Anna continued:
“And that part is not enough to make me lie for you.”
Julian’s hand trembled.
“They’ll take everything.”
“Maybe.”
“Blackwood.”
“Maybe.”
“Halcyon.”
“We’ll see.”
“Our life.”
Anna looked at him.
“That part is already gone.”
The truth landed.
Julian closed his eyes.
For several seconds, Anna thought he would pull the trigger.
Then Mara spoke.
“If you die now, you get to remain whatever story you want.”
Julian opened his eyes.
She stepped forward.
“But if you live, you have to hear what you did.”
His hand shook harder.
Mara’s voice remained calm.
“You have to sit in a courtroom while people say it.”
“You have to hear my name.”
“You have to hear Anna’s.”
“Claire’s.”
Julian’s face changed.
Claire.
There.
Mara saw it.
“You know what happened to her.”
Julian whispered:
“No.”
Mara stepped closer.
“You do.”
Sirens stopped outside.
Doors slammed.
Voices.
Federal agents approaching.
Mara said:
“Live.”
Not compassion.
Sentence.
“Live long enough to answer.”
Julian lowered the gun.
Agents entered seconds later.
He was arrested in the old garage.
No dramatic fight.
No last escape.
Just handcuffs.
Anna watched the man she had shared a bed with for three years become evidence.
Then investigators searched Blackwood.
The hidden room.
The forged signatures.
Mara’s death certificate.
Financial files.
Insurance records.
Jonah’s archive.
And something beneath the basement floor.
Bones.
Not Mara’s.
Female.
Anna stood outside when forensic teams carried them out.
Mara looked away.
Julian had said he did not know whose remains were used to fake Mara’s death.
Now police suspected he did.
Dental records eventually confirmed the body.
Claire Donovan.
Julian’s former fiancée.
Missing eleven years.
Mara sat down when she heard.
“Did he kill her?”
Investigators could not yet say.
But Jonah had copied an old recording.
Julian arguing with his father.
His father saying:
You can cover an accident once. You cannot build a life out of it.
Julian replying:
Then stop making me clean up everyone else’s weakness.
The recording was dated two weeks after Claire disappeared.
The case reopened.
Anna spent that night in a hotel.
Mara refused Blackwood.
Of course.
They took separate rooms.
At 3 a.m., Anna knocked on Mara’s door.
Mara opened.
Neither knew what to say.
Finally Anna asked:
“Did you hate me?”
Mara looked surprised.
“For marrying him.”
“You didn’t know.”
“That doesn’t answer.”
Mara thought.
“Yes.”
Anna nodded.
“I used to imagine you.”
“What?”
“The woman who got everything after I disappeared.”
Anna felt tears.
Mara continued.
“I hated your face before I knew you.”
“Fair.”
“No.”
Mara shook her head.
“Understandable. Not fair.”
That distinction mattered.
Anna sat.
Mara asked:
“Did he love you?”
Anna looked toward the dark window.
“Yes.”
Mara nodded slowly.
“I think he loved me too.”
Anna looked at her.
Mara continued:
“That’s the worst part, isn’t it?”
Yes.
If Julian had been incapable of love, everything became simpler.
But people can love and still control.
Love and still lie.
Love and still become dangerous.
Anna whispered:
“What happens now?”
Mara looked at her.
“For the first time?”
May you like
“We decide separately.”
And they did.
