That sentence sounds absurd.
The process was worse.
Courts.
Birth records.
Death certificates.
Tax identities.
Frozen trusts.
Bank accounts.
Marriage records.
She had to prove repeatedly that she existed.
At one hearing, a clerk asked:
“Are you the deceased party?”
Mara stared.
“Apparently not.”
Anna nearly laughed.
It felt good.
Mara regained Blackwood.
Legally it had always been hers.
She also recovered portions of the Winter-Mercer Trust.
But the money did not feel like victory.
She sold Blackwood.
Immediately.
A hotel group offered $18 million.
She refused.
A university purchased it for far less and converted parts of the estate into a research center for coercive-control law, financial abuse, and missing-person investigations.
The west wing was demolished.
Mara watched.
Did not cry.
Anna asked:
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
“Some people would preserve it as evidence.”
“I have evidence.”
Mara looked at the collapsing stone.
“I don’t need architecture.”
Anna understood.
Halcyon Biotech survived too.
Barely.
Julian had lied about some debts.
Not all.
Mercer Capital had indeed financed the company.
But independent restructuring saved it.
Anna stepped onto the board.
For the first time.
She had inherited shares and spent years letting other people explain what they meant.
No longer.
She learned.
Slowly.
Asked stupid questions.
Then discovered most people calling questions stupid were afraid of answers.
Halcyon sold two divisions.
Cut executive bonuses.
Protected most jobs.
Julian’s threat—that telling the truth would automatically destroy eight thousand families—was false.
There were costs.
But catastrophe had been another tool.
Anna eventually became chair.
