Chapter 9 - THE UNCLE

Daniel's disappearance forced the police to accelerate the investigation.
A hidden server was discovered beneath the Mercer mansion.
It contained profiles of Ethan's weaknesses, debts, habits, and emotional triggers.
Someone had studied him for years.
The file title was PROJECT HEIR.
Ethan stared at his name.
“They planned my life.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No. They planned your fall.”
The files showed payments to people who loaned Ethan money. They showed anonymous complaints sent to Victor. They showed messages designed to make Ethan believe his father intended to cut him out.
The cruelty was simple.
Daniel had not created Ethan's greed.
He had watered it.
When Ethan realized this, he felt something worse than anger.
Shame.
He had blamed manipulation for his decision, but manipulation had only opened a door. He had walked through it himself.
Victor's communication device displayed:
YOUR CHOICE.
Ethan looked up.
“Yes,” he whispered. “My choice.”
Victor nodded.
The police eventually arrested Daniel at a roadside motel. He had been preparing to leave the country.
He laughed when officers entered.
“Did Ethan turn on me?”
“No,” Ortiz said. “Your own records did.”
Daniel asked for Victor.
He was denied.
In the hospital, Victor watched the news.
Daniel's picture appeared on every screen.
Ethan sat beside his father.
“I should hate him.”
Victor's device displayed:
NO.
“Why not?”
Because hate keeps the door open.
Ethan understood.
The man who had manipulated his life would not get to own his future too.

The hidden server contained years of surveillance. Ethan saw notes about his friendships, spending habits, debts, arguments, and even his favorite restaurants. Someone had turned his personality into a map and used it to predict his behavior. The cruelty of the plan made him sick. Daniel had not created Ethan's greed, but he had studied it and watered it. Ethan could no longer pretend he was simply a victim. He had become an accomplice to his own worst instinct. Victor's device flashed: YOUR CHOICE. Ethan sat beside the bed and nodded. “Yes,” he said. “My choice.” It was not a grand declaration. It was only the first honest sentence he had spoken since the pool. Yet it became the sentence that changed everything that followed.
When Daniel was finally arrested, he asked Detective Ortiz whether Victor had forgiven Ethan. Ortiz said she didn't know. Daniel laughed. “He always loved that boy too much.” Ethan heard about the exchange later. It bothered him. Even the man who had manipulated his life could see something Ethan had been blind to: Victor's love had never disappeared, even when trust did.
