Chapter 15 - CLAIRE'S TESTIMONY
Claire testified against Daniel and admitted her role in the conspiracy.
Ethan met her once after the trial.
They sat across from each other.
“I thought you were dead,” Ethan said.
“I know.”
“Why did you let me believe it?”
“Because fear made me selfish.”
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
Ethan waited for an excuse.
None came.
Claire looked at him.
“You were always searching for approval.”
“I know.”
“I used that.”
“I know.”
She started crying.
“I am sorry.”
Ethan did not forgive her immediately.
Forgiveness was not a switch.
But he accepted the apology.
“Tell me one thing,” he said. “Did Victor really love me?”
Claire laughed through tears.
“He loved you so much he built his whole life around keeping you safe.”
Ethan looked down.
“That doesn't excuse what I did.”
“No,” Claire said. “But maybe it explains why you can still choose better.”

Claire's apology did not repair their family. Ethan knew that. But it ended a question that had lived in his mind for years: had he imagined the manipulation? No. Daniel had studied him. Claire had used him. Victor had hidden things from him. Yet none of that absolved Ethan. When he left the meeting, he felt strangely lighter. He did not need to decide whether Claire was good or evil. He only needed to decide how much access she would have to his future. The answer was simple. Very little. Ethan could acknowledge her pain without carrying it. He could accept an apology without forgetting the damage. For the first time, he understood that forgiveness and trust were separate choices.
Before leaving Claire, Ethan asked one final question. “If you could change one thing, what would it be?” Claire thought for a long time. “I would tell the truth before the first lie.” Ethan nodded. That was exactly the lesson he had learned. The first lie rarely looked dangerous. It was the second, third, and tenth that built the cage. He left her there with no promise except that he would not repeat her mistakes.
