Chapter 8 - THE BROTHER IN THE SHADOWS

Daniel Mercer returned to the hospital at midnight.
Security footage caught him entering with a stolen badge.
He walked into Victor's room and smiled.
“Still alive.”
Victor stared at him.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“You really did it.”
Ethan's face went cold.
“Did what?”
“Pushed him.”
Daniel looked amused.
“That saved me years of work.”
Detective Ortiz entered with officers.
Daniel did not run.
“You're under arrest,” Ortiz said.
“For what?”
“Fraud, identity theft, witness intimidation, conspiracy.”
Daniel laughed.
Then the hospital lights went out.
When they returned, Daniel was gone.
Victor's bedside envelope was missing.
Ortiz cursed.
Ethan looked at Victor.
“What was in it?”
Victor's eyes moved toward the communication screen.
THE TRUTH ABOUT YOU.
Ethan's pulse accelerated.
The next day, Anna revealed that Daniel was Ethan's biological father.
Victor had raised Ethan after Claire became pregnant. Daniel wanted nothing to do with the child at first. Later, when Ethan grew older, Daniel discovered how useful resentment could be.
“You were his weapon,” Anna said.
Ethan struggled to breathe.
“He never told me.”
“Because Victor loved you as his own.”
Ethan looked at Victor's photograph.
Biology suddenly seemed smaller than every bedtime story, every bandage, every school play, every birthday.
Victor had chosen him.
Daniel had only claimed him.
And for the first time Ethan understood the difference between being someone's blood and being someone's son.

Victor watched the rain slide down the hospital window while Daniel's name appeared on the news. His brother had been officially dead for fifteen years, yet the man had walked into the hospital as if the past belonged to him. Maya asked Victor why he had kept the secret for so long. His communication device displayed three words: “I was afraid.” Ethan read them twice. He had always imagined his father as fearless. Victor had built a company, negotiated with dangerous people, and survived countless crises. Yet he had been afraid too. That realization softened something inside Ethan. A parent could be powerful and still make mistakes. A parent could love someone and still lie to protect them. None of it made the lies harmless, but it made them human.
After Daniel disappeared from the hospital, Victor refused to sleep. He kept staring at the door. Ethan understood the look. His father was not afraid of death. He was afraid that the people he loved would keep hurting each other because nobody had been brave enough to stop the cycle. Ethan promised him one thing: “I won't hide behind excuses anymore.” Victor's eyes softened.
