Chapter 6 - All the Cards on the TableThe playroom fell into a heavy silence.

No one spoke.

Leo clung tightly to Evelyn's hand, his small fingers trembling.

She knelt beside him and gently brushed the tears from his face.

"It's okay, sweetheart," she whispered. "Go wait for me in the library. Mrs. Harper is already there."

Leo nodded and quietly left the room.

Only after the door clicked shut did Evelyn stand to face Richard and Sarah.

Neither of them realized that her expression had changed.

She was no longer the betrayed wife.

She was the CEO who had spent her career preparing for crises.

Slowly, she reached into her handbag and removed her phone.

Richard smirked.

"Calling the police?"

Evelyn looked at him with complete composure.

"No."

"I'm showing you something."

She tapped the screen.

A live video feed appeared.

Richard frowned.

The camera overlooked the very room they were standing in.

But it wasn't coming from any visible security camera.

The angle was higher.

Hidden.

Then Richard recognized it.

The antique clock sitting quietly on the bookshelf in his private study.

His face drained of color.

"Impossible..."

Evelyn lowered the phone only slightly.

"You always underestimated me."

"You assumed I only understood boardrooms and balance sheets."

She took a slow step forward.

"I also understand risk."

"When numbers stop making sense... I investigate."

"When people start lying... I verify."

"When trust disappears... I collect evidence."

Richard stared silently at the screen.

Weeks of recorded meetings.

Late-night visits.

Conversations.

Financial records.

Transfers between offshore accounts.

Documents linking shell companies to accounts secretly controlled through Sarah's name.

Nothing had been left to chance.

"You weren't just having an affair," Evelyn said quietly.

"You were moving company assets through fraudulent transactions while preparing to erase me from both this family and the business."

Richard lunged toward the phone.

Evelyn stepped back without hesitation.

"Don't."

Her voice was calm.

Ice-cold.

"Every file has already been duplicated."

"My attorneys have them."

"The company's independent audit committee has them."

"And if anything happens to Leo or me..."

She held Richard's gaze.

"...those records won't stay private for long."

The room became deathly quiet.

For the first time that evening...

Richard had nothing to say.

Sarah slowly turned toward him.

"What is she talking about?"

Richard remained silent.

She looked back at Evelyn.

Then at Richard again.

"You told me everything was legal."

Still...

No answer.

The confidence disappeared from Sarah's face.

The realization struck all at once.

She hadn't been a partner.

She had been a convenient name.

A shield.

Someone to absorb the consequences if the scheme ever came to light.

"Richard..."

Her voice shook.

"You said we were protected."

Evelyn looked at them both.

There was no anger left in her expression.

Only disappointment.

"You destroyed your own lives long before I walked into this room."

"You confused greed with victory."

"You confused betrayal with intelligence."

"And now..."

"You're finally meeting the cost."

A firm knock sounded at the front door.

Moments later, members of Evelyn's private executive security team entered the house.

She had arranged for them to remain nearby after deciding to return home unexpectedly, unwilling to take any chances once her instincts told her something was wrong.

The team leader approached respectfully.

"Mrs. Sterling."

She nodded.

"Ms. Collins is no longer welcome in this home."

The officers escorted Sarah toward the front entrance without resistance.

She looked back once.

Richard never moved.

Never defended her.

Never even met her eyes.

He simply stood alone in the center of the room.

Exactly where his own choices had left him.

Evelyn turned toward him one final time.

"You have twenty-four hours to collect your personal belongings."

"After that, my attorneys will handle everything else."

Richard lowered his head.

For the first time in years...

He had no argument.

No manipulation.

No control.

Only consequences.

Evelyn walked into the library.

Leo looked up the moment he saw her.

Without saying a word, he ran into her arms.

She held him tightly.

Long enough for him to know that he was safe.

Outside, the evening rain washed over the Sterling estate.

Inside, the silence felt different now.

Not frightening.

Peaceful.

The lies were over.

The masks were gone.

And although the road ahead would not be easy, Evelyn knew one thing with absolute certainty.

No fortune.

No mansion.

No marriage.

Would ever matter more than protecting the child in her arms.

For the first time in a long time...

The Sterling house truly felt like home again.
