Chapter 5 - When the Last Mask FallsEvelyn Sterling didn't plan to return until the following afternoon.

An international meeting had been canceled, causing her flight home to be almost a day earlier.
She smiled to herself as the driver turned through the iron gates of Sterling Manor.
"Leo will be so surprised," she thought.
The mansion looked exactly as she had left.
The gardens were perfectly manicured.
The fountain sparkled in the afternoon sun.
Everything seemed peaceful.
Until she stepped through the massive oak door.
Instead of laughter...
She heard a terrified scream from upstairs.
"Mother!"
The sound shattered the silence like broken glass.
Before she could even put down her suitcase, Evelyn dashed toward the stairs.
Her heart pounded in her ears.
She went to the playroom and pushed the door open.
The sight before her made time seem to stand still.
Sarah was standing over Leo, gripping his arm tightly as he struggled to break free. Sarah raised her hand, ready to slap Leo.
His eyes were filled with fear.
An open notebook lay on the floor beside him.
Several pages had been torn out.
Sarah's calm, caring expression—the expression Evelyn had trusted for years—was gone.
Instead, a face contorted with anger.
"What do you think you're doing?" Sarah asked, her voice sharp.
Before the slap could land, Evelyn grabbed Sarah's hand.
"Sarah!"
Evelyn's voice echoed through the room.
"Stay away from my son."
Then Evelyn slapped Sarah twice.
For the first time since entering the Sterling house, she looked genuinely surprised.
But the surprise lasted only a moment.
She slowly released Leo's hand, adjusted her dress, and calmly tucked a lock of hair behind her ear.
The terrified butler Evelyn believed she knew…
Did not appear.
Instead, Sarah smiled.
A cold, confident smile.
"Then…"
"Come home early."
Before Evelyn could answer, another voice rang out from the hallway.
"What's all the noise?"
Richard Sterling entered the room with astonishing composure.
He glanced at Leo.
Then at Sarah.
Finally, at his wife.
There was no trace of worry in his eyes.
No confusion.
Only quiet indifference.
"Evelyn," he said calmly, "you're overreacting."
She looked at him in disbelief.
"Our son is terrified."
Richard sighed as if discussing a minor inconvenience.
"He's just a child."
"Children have vivid imaginations."
Those words hurt Evelyn more than she expected.
She looked from Richard to Sarah.
Then back to Richard.
Neither of them seemed worried.
Neither of them tried to explain.
Instead…
Richard calmly walked across the room and stopped beside Sarah.
Without hesitation, he placed his hand on her shoulder.
The gesture lasted only a second.
But it said it all.
Years of doubt.
Weeks of unanswered questions.
Countless feelings of unease.
In that moment…
All lies crumbled.
Sarah looked at Evelyn with eyes no longer concealed behind politeness.
"I suppose," she said softly, "there's no reason to pretend anymore."
Silence filled the room.
Leo clung tightly to his mother.
Evelyn wrapped her arms around him, instinctively shielding him.
She could feel his small body trembling.
Richard crossed his arms.
"The company… the home… the future."
"They're moving on."
"You should too."
For a brief moment, the world beneath Evelyn's feet seemed to vanish.
The husband she once trusted.
The employee she once treated like family.
Standing side by side.
Unity not by loyalty…
But by betrayal.
Then something inside Evelyn changed.
She wasn't looking at the two people she'd lost.
She was looking at the two people who had underestimated her.
She slowly rose, one arm still tightly gripping Leo for protection.
Her voice was calm.
Terrifyingly calm.
"You believe you took everything from me."
Richard remained silent.
Evelyn looked him straight in the eyes.
"No, Richard."
"You've only shown me your true self."
She glanced at Leo, then back at the two men standing before her.
"And from this moment on..."
"My sole responsibility is to protect my son."
The room fell silent.
No one spoke.
Outside, dark clouds rolled across the Connecticut sky.
Inside the Sterling mansion...
The last masks had fallen.

And Leo's battle for his future has only just begun.
Change everything.
