Chapter 1 - The Days Mother Was AwayThe Sterling estate stood proudly in the quiet suburbs of Connecticut, its towering oak doors opening into grand halls illuminated by crystal chandeliers and polished marble floors. To outsiders, it looked like the perfect home—a place where wealth, elegance, and happiness lived under one roof.

But for six-year-old Leo Sterling, the mansion felt very different.

Especially when his mother wasn't there.

Every few weeks, Evelyn Sterling, the successful CEO of an international investment firm, would leave on another business trip. Before each departure, she would kneel beside Leo, gently straighten his tiny bow tie or brush back his hair, and promise with a warm smile,

"I'll be home before you know it, sweetheart."

Leo always nodded bravely.

He never wanted his mother to worry.

As Evelyn walked through the massive oak doors and her car disappeared down the long driveway, Leo would stand silently by the window, watching until the taillights vanished into the distance.

Only then would the house become unbearably quiet.

Evelyn never questioned her decision to leave Leo in the care of Sarah Collins, the family's live-in housekeeper.

Sarah had worked for the Sterlings for nearly four years.

She was punctual.

Respectful.

Soft-spoken.

She never missed a birthday.

Never forgot a household detail.

The staff admired her professionalism.

Neighbors often commented on how fortunate Evelyn was to have someone so devoted caring for her son.

To everyone else...

Sarah was the perfect employee.

But appearances can be carefully crafted.

The moment the heavy oak doors closed behind Evelyn, something inside Sarah changed.

The gentle smile faded from her face.

Her warm voice disappeared.

Even the way she walked became colder, sharper, almost mechanical.

She glanced toward the security cameras mounted throughout the house—not with fear, but with confidence.

She already knew exactly which cameras had blind spots.

Which hallways remained unwatched.

Which rooms were never entered by anyone except Leo.

She had learned every corner of the mansion.

Not to protect it.

But to control it.

Leo noticed the difference almost immediately.

Sarah no longer called him "sweetheart."

Instead, her voice became short and impatient.

"No running."

"No talking."

"No cartoons."

"If you make a mess, you'll clean it yourself."

The mansion that once echoed with laughter became strangely silent whenever Evelyn was away.

Leo didn't understand why Sarah acted so differently.

He only knew that every business trip meant the same thing.

Long, lonely days.

Longer, frightening nights.

Sometimes, as rain tapped softly against the tall windows, Leo would clutch his favorite stuffed bear and whisper to himself,

"Mom will come home soon."

It was the sentence he repeated every night before falling asleep.

The only thing that made him feel safe.

What Leo didn't know...

Was that Sarah wasn't simply being cruel.

She was hiding something.

Something that had been growing in the shadows of the Sterling estate long before anyone thought to look behind the oak doors.

And before Evelyn returned from her latest business trip...

Those shadows would begin revealing their secrets.
