Forensic comparison eventually supported Maya.
Consent form appeared to bear Claire’s signature.
But likely traced/copied from another document.
Who forged?
Robert denied.
Maya denied.
Northbridge compliance director at time:
Susan Bell.
She died four years ago.
Cannot ask.
Internal email suggested pressure to complete validation dataset before acquisition.
Susan wrote:
Need Miller file closed today.
Maya replied:
Still missing consent.
Susan:
Use prior authorization package.
Maya:
That does not authorize research.
There.
Maya had objected.
Then later system showed consent uploaded under Maya’s credentials.
She claimed Susan used workstation while Maya away.
Could be.
No proof yet.
Maya became suspect again.
Then Claire’s notes:
Maya didn’t forge it.
I believe her.
That mattered.
Claire thought someone else.
Then one audit log showed uploaded PDF created on Robert’s assistant’s computer.
Assistant:
Kevin Shaw.
Former compliance contractor.
Where now?
Chief operating officer of company that bought Northbridge.
Financial motive.
Kevin had pushed acquisition.
Clean validation records increased valuation by maybe millions.
He might forge.
Daniel found settlement document where Kevin received $4.2 million transaction bonus.
There.
Then Kevin denied.
Said assistant pool computer.
Could be others.
Still.
Then box 417 opened.
Inside:
Three envelopes.
One addressed LILY.
One SOPHIE.
One ROBERT.
And a small data card.
No big revelation yet.
Daniel said Claire’s instruction required envelopes not opened until data authenticated.
Fine.
Data card contained NR-17 original firmware snapshot.
Authorship metadata:
Hannah Cole.
Date before Northbridge funding.
Strong evidence Hannah retained preexisting IP contribution.
Also logs showed Sophie’s test data imported later.
Without explicit consent.
Potential claim.
Then final log entry:
USER: MR.
Maya Reynolds?
She went pale.
“That's not me.”
Could be initials.
Michael Ross? Mark Reed? Need not.
Employee directory:
Matthew Raines.
Research director.
Dead? Better alive.
Matthew Raines, now consultant.
He admitted importing Sophie data.
Why?
Susan ordered.
Did he know no consent?
He assumed compliance handled.
Then user MR not Maya.
Another misdirection resolved.
Then Claire’s SOPHIE envelope remained sealed.
Why?
Instruction:
Open only if Maya attacks the leg.
Everyone stared.
Claire had literally anticipated something like this?
Maybe not exact physical attack. Wording could be: “If Maya tries to take the leg.” Let's avoid implausibly prophetic. Envelope says: IF MAYA TRIES TO TAKE THIS FROM SOPHIE, OPEN.
Still eerie.
Maya whispered:
“She knew I might.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew what my father asked me to do.”
“What?”
