THE ROOM OPPOSITE / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The SentenceMax received twenty-two years.

Not because he slept with my wife.

That part mattered only to us.

He received twenty-two years because he treated companies, marriages, identities, and people as tools inside a system designed to protect himself.

At sentencing, Celeste spoke.

“You taught me to doubt my own memory.”

Rachel spoke too.

“You made lying feel like sophistication.”

Then Peter Hall.

“You made ordinary employees responsible for numbers they were never allowed to question.”

I did not speak.

The judge did not need my marriage story to understand financial crime.

Max asked to address the court.

He stood.

“I made mistakes.”

The judge interrupted.

“Mistakes?”

Max changed wording.

“I made choices.”

Better.

He apologized to his children.

To Celeste.

To Northstar.

Not Rachel.

Maybe because doing so would damage his legal position.

Maybe because some pride survived everything.

Then he looked toward me.

“You think you won.”

I almost laughed.

Security moved closer.

The judge warned him.

I said nothing.

Because he was wrong.

Winning would have been going home that night before any of this happened.

Rachel wearing her ring.

Me believing her.

A normal marriage.

There was no victory available anymore.

Only what came after.
