Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

The midnight hour in the penthouse felt entirely divorced from the bustling, sleepless city humming forty-two floors below. Inside David’s mahogany-paneled study, the atmosphere was as heavy and pressurized as the depths of the ocean. The only illumination came from the green glass banker’s lamp on the desk, casting long, severe shadows against the walls.

Sitting across from David was his older brother, Elias Vance. Elias was a senior prosecutor for the district attorney’s office, a man whose reputation for courtroom ruthlessness bordered on legendary. He shared David’s dark hair and sharp jawline, but where David’s eyes usually held the measured warmth of a negotiator, Elias’s eyes were the flat, unreadable slate of a natural-born predator.

Spread across the polished wood between them were the high-resolution photographs taken by Dr. Thorne.

Elias stared at the images of Mia’s bruised, battered torso and the horrific, hand-shaped contusion on her forearm in absolute silence. For three full minutes, the only sound in the room was the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner. When Elias finally looked up, the icy fury in his expression was terrifying.

"I’m going to bury her," Elias stated, his voice a low, lethal rasp. He didn't ask questions. He didn't express shock. He simply accepted the reality and immediately shifted into the role of the executioner. "Not just a divorce, David. I’m going to make sure she rots in a state penitentiary. Aggravated assault on a minor, child endangerment, and systematic physical abuse."

"I want her locked out of everything, Elias," David said, his voice equally hollow, exhausted but fueled by a dark, burning adrenaline. "I’ve already had the bank freeze the joint accounts, and I canceled all the platinum cards where she is an authorized user. But she’s going to fight. She threatened to drag my name through the mud, to take half of my assets."

Elias scoffed, a short, sharp sound of pure disdain. "Let her try. She signed an ironclad prenuptial agreement, but even if she hadn't, the moment a judge sees this medical report, any claim she has to marital support evaporates. We are filing an emergency ex parte restraining order first thing in the morning. She won't be allowed within five hundred yards of you, Mia, or this building."

Elias leaned forward, tapping a finger on the photograph of Mia’s arm. "But we need to move faster than her. Women like Sarah—narcissistic sociopaths who use their appearance as currency—always play the victim when they are cornered. She will try to spin a narrative. We need to strike her with criminal charges before she can even find a PR firm."

While the brothers plotted the destruction of the monster, the monster in question was currently sitting in a room that felt like a profound insult to her existence.

Ten miles away, in a mid-range, sterile corporate hotel, Sarah was perched on the edge of a scratchy polyester bedspread. When David’s security had dumped her on the street, she had hailed a cab and confidently handed the driver her black American Express card, only to have it declined. Two more cards had yielded the same humiliating result. She had been forced to use the emergency cash in her designer handbag to pay the cab and secure a room in a hotel she wouldn't have previously allowed her dog to sleep in.

She stared at her reflection in the cheap, smudged mirror above the dresser. The immaculate updo was ruined, her silk blouse wrinkled. Rage, hot and blinding, bubbled up in her throat.

How dare he, she thought, her hands balling into tight fists. How dare he humiliate me over that little brat!

In Sarah’s twisted, self-serving reality, she was entirely justified. Mia was a stubborn, difficult child who refused to love her, a constant, irritating reminder of David’s dead first wife. The physical "corrections," as Sarah called them in her own mind, were merely attempts to instil discipline. If the child bruised easily, that was hardly her fault.

She pulled out her phone and dialed a number she had kept hidden in her contacts under a fake name. Julian Cross. He was a high-profile, notoriously unscrupulous divorce attorney known for taking billionaire husbands to the cleaners by utilizing aggressive tabloid smear campaigns.

"Julian," Sarah said the moment he answered, immediately adopting a voice trembling with manufactured distress. "It’s Sarah Vance. I need your help. David... he’s lost his mind. He threw me out of our home tonight with nothing. He’s become paranoid, aggressive. He’s obsessed with that troubled daughter of his. The girl is self-harming, Julian, throwing herself against furniture, and David is blaming me. I fear for my life."

"Hold on, Sarah, slow down," Julian’s slick voice came through the speaker. "He threw you out? Unilaterally? This is excellent. It’s illegal eviction. And the child is self-harming, you say? We can use that. We’ll paint him as a negligent, unhinged father projecting his failures onto you. I’ll meet you for breakfast. Don't speak to anyone else. We are going to make him pay for every tear you shed."

Sarah hung up the phone, a cold, triumphant smile curving her lips. David thought he could discard her? She would burn his pristine reputation to the ground and walk away with a mountain of his money in the ashes.

Back at the penthouse, the silence was shattered by a piercing, terrified scream.

David bolted upright from the study sofa, his heart leaping into his throat. He sprinted down the hallway, taking the corners so fast he nearly slipped on the marble, bursting into the master bedroom.

Mia was sitting up in the center of the massive king-sized bed, her eyes wide open but completely unseeing, trapped in the grip of a night terror. She was hyperventilating, her small hands clawing frantically at the duvet as if she were trying to dig her way out of a grave.

"No! Please, I won't touch it! I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" she shrieked, her voice tearing at her vocal cords.

"Mia!" David rushed to the bed, climbing onto the mattress and pulling her into his chest. She thrashed against him wildly, her fists pounding against his shoulders, still lost in the nightmare where Sarah’s hands were dragging her by the hair.

"Let me go! Papa!" she screamed.

"I'm here, monkey, I'm here! It's Papa!" David said firmly, his voice thick with tears, wrapping his arms around her to keep her from hurting herself. He rocked her back and forth, burying his face in her dark hair. "You're safe. Wake up, sweetie, you're safe. She's gone. Papa is holding you. She can't reach you here."

Slowly, the frantic thrashing began to subside. Mia blinked, her chest heaving, the glazed look in her eyes fading as the dim light of the bedside lamp brought the reality of the bedroom into focus. She looked up at David, her chin quivering.

"Papa?" she whimpered.

May you like

"I've got you," David whispered, pressing a long, desperate kiss to her forehead. "I'm right here. I'm never letting you go."

Mia collapsed against his chest, her small fingers curling tightly into the fabric of his shirt. She wept until she had no tears left, her exhaustion finally pulling her back into a deep, dreamless sleep. David didn't move. He stayed there for the rest of the night, sitting up against the headboard, his arms securely locked around his daughter, acting as the human shield he should have been all along.
