Chapter 4 - The Castle Walls

The sanctuary of David’s private study was dimly lit, the heavy velvet curtains drawn tight against the afternoon sun. Mia had exhausted herself from crying and was now drifting in and out of a traumatized, fitful doze, her head resting on a plush pillow in David’s lap. He hadn't moved for over an hour, afraid that shifting his weight might break the fragile sense of safety she had just found.
His phone buzzed silently on the glass coffee table. It was Marcus, confirming that Sarah’s access cards had been deactivated, the building’s security instructed to arrest her for trespassing if she returned, and the locks to the private elevator were already being reprogrammed. The perimeter was secure.
But David knew that locking the monster out wasn't enough; he needed to assess the damage the monster had left inside.
With painful reluctance, he gently shifted Mia’s weight, resting her head on the arm of the sofa, and stood up. He walked to his mahogany desk and made a call to a private, encrypted number.
"Dr. Thorne," David said the moment the line connected, keeping his voice to a low, tight whisper. Dr. Aris Thorne was one of the top pediatricians in the city and, more importantly, an old college friend of David's who valued discretion above all else. "I need you at the penthouse immediately. Bring a medical kit for trauma assessment."
"David? What’s happened? Is it Mia?" Aris’s voice was instantly alert.
"Yes. It’s physical abuse," David choked out, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. To say it aloud made the nightmare undeniably real. "By Sarah. I need you to examine her, treat her, and document everything. Every single mark."
"I’m leaving the clinic now. I’ll be there in twenty minutes," Aris replied grimly.
While waiting, David walked back to the sofa and knelt beside it. Mia’s eyes fluttered open, heavy with exhaustion and lingering fear. She tensed instantly, looking around the room as if expecting Sarah to lunge from the shadows.
"It's okay, sweetheart, it's just us," David murmured, brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead. "I called Uncle Aris. He’s coming over to make sure you're okay. He needs to look at your arm, Mia. And anywhere else she hurt you."
Mia’s lower lip quivered, and she pulled her gray sweater tighter around her small frame, a deeply ingrained defensive mechanism. "She said... she said if I told you, you wouldn't believe me," Mia whispered, her voice fragile and broken. "She said you loved her more. She said if I cried, she would send me away to a terrible place where you would never find me."
The revelation struck David like a physical stab to the heart. The psychological torture had been just as brutal as the physical. He carefully took both of her small hands in his.
"Mia, look at my eyes," David commanded softly, waiting until her tearful brown eyes met his. "I love you more than my own life. You are the most important thing in this entire universe to me. Sarah lied to you. She is an evil, sick woman, and I will never let anyone take you away from me. Never."
The private elevator chimed, and a minute later, Marcus escorted Dr. Thorne into the study. Aris, a tall man with a gentle demeanor and a graying beard, took one look at David’s devastated face and then at the small girl on the sofa, and his professional mask slipped into one of deep sorrow.
"Hello, Mia," Aris said softly, setting his medical bag on the floor and kneeling beside her. "Your dad tells me you've got some owies we need to look at. Is it okay if I check?"
Mia looked at David, seeking permission. David nodded encouragingly, though it took every ounce of his willpower not to break down again. "It's okay, monkey. Uncle Aris is here to help."
With agonizing slowness, Aris helped Mia take off the thick gray sweater. David had braced himself, but when the fabric was pulled away, the reality of the horror tore the breath from his lungs.
The massive bruise on her forearm was only the beginning. There were older, fading yellowish bruises on her upper arms, marks of being violently grabbed and dragged. As Aris gently lifted the hem of her t-shirt, David had to turn away, pressing his fist to his mouth to stifle a visceral sob. Along her small ribs, there were dark, mottled contusions.
"She pushed me against the edge of the bathtub last week," Mia whispered to the doctor, her voice devoid of emotion, detached, as if reciting a story about someone else. "I didn't fold my towels right."
David walked to the far end of the study, gripping the edge of a bookshelf so hard his knuckles turned white. He wanted to kill Sarah. The urge was primitive, all-consuming, and entirely rational. He wanted to hunt her down and inflict every ounce of pain she had forced upon his defenseless child.
"You're very brave, Mia," Aris said gently, taking photographs of the injuries with a clinical camera, meticulously documenting the evidence of the abuse. He applied a soothing arnica salve to the worst of the bruising and wrapped her forearm in a soft, protective bandage to prevent further irritation.
After giving Mia a mild, child-safe sedative to help her sleep through the adrenaline crash, David carried her into his own massive bed, tucking the heavy duvet around her. He left the bedside lamp on—she had developed a sudden terror of the dark over the last few months, another mystery now brutally solved—and cracked the door open before returning to the study.
Aris was packing his medical bag, his face grim. "I’ve seen a lot of things in my line of work, David. This is textbook, systematic abuse. The different healing stages of the contusions indicate this has been going on for months. She targeted areas easily hidden by clothes. It’s calculated."
"I need the medical report," David said, his voice flat, devoid of the earlier despair, replaced entirely by cold, strategic warfare.
"You'll have it within the hour," Aris promised. "What are you going to do?"
"I’m going to ruin her," David stated simply, pouring himself a neat glass of whiskey, though he didn't drink it. He just stared at the amber liquid. "I’m not just going to divorce her, Aris. I am going to bury her under the full weight of the criminal justice system. I’m going to freeze every asset she thinks she has a claim to. She wanted the lifestyle of the elite? I’m going to make sure she can't even afford a public defender."

As Aris left, David sat behind his massive mahogany desk and opened his laptop. He bypassed his corporate lawyers and dialed the personal cell phone of Elias Vance, his older brother and one of the most ruthless criminal prosecutors in the state.
The walls of the castle had been breached once, allowing the monster inside. But as David listened to the phone ring, he swore upon his own soul that he would build a fortress around his daughter so high and so impenetrable, that no one would ever dare to hurt her again. And for Sarah, he would build a prison.
