Chapter 4

The next morning, Evelyn arrived at Hart Holdings headquarters wearing her most expensive suit.
She had rehearsed her explanation all night.
"It was an accident."
She repeated the words to herself as the elevator climbed.
When the doors opened...
Every employee was already standing.
No one greeted her.
No one smiled.
At the end of the boardroom stood Adrian.
Still wearing the same wedding ring.
Still carrying the same calm expression.
Only this time...
Twenty-four attorneys stood behind him.
Evelyn laughed.
"You can't fire me."
"I own twenty-two percent of this company."
Adrian nodded.
"You did."
He slid a folder across the table.
She opened it.
Inside were documents transferring every one of her shares.
Signed.
Not by her.
By the bank.
Her hands began to shake.
"What is this?"
"You borrowed against your shares."
"So?"
"The loan matured yesterday."
Her breathing quickened.
"You..."
"You bought the debt."
The room remained silent.
Adrian folded his hands.
"When you pushed my wife into that pool..."
"...you forgot to make one loan payment."
Evelyn stared at him.
"You planned this?"
"No."
His voice was calm.
"You planned this."
He nodded toward the folder.
"I simply chose not to save you from your own decisions."
She rushed home.
Or tried to.
The front gate wouldn't open.
Moving trucks lined the driveway.
Workers carefully wrapped paintings.
Furniture.
Statues.
Everything.
"What are you doing?"
A court officer handed her a document.
"The property has been repossessed."
"This house belongs to Mr. Adrian Cross."
She looked around wildly.
"This has been my home for fifteen years!"
The officer replied quietly,
"No."
"You've merely been living in someone else's."
That evening...
Olivia finally opened her eyes in the hospital.
The first thing she did was place her hand over her stomach.
Adrian smiled.
"The baby's fine."
She burst into tears.
Not from fear.
From relief.
A tiny voice came from the doorway.
"May I come in?"
It was the little girl.
The one who had screamed.
She clutched a bouquet of fresh pink lilies.
"I'm sorry the flowers fell into the pool."
Olivia smiled gently.
"Come here."
The little girl walked over.
"I thought the baby was gone."
Olivia took her hand and placed it softly against her stomach.
A tiny kick answered almost immediately.
The little girl's eyes grew wide.
"It moved!"
Olivia laughed through her tears.
"Yes."
"She says thank you."
The little girl blinked.
"She?"
Adrian smiled.
"We just found out."
"We're having a daughter."
The room filled with quiet laughter.
For the first time since the nightmare began...
It felt like hope had entered with the evening light.
Several weeks later...
The criminal trial began.
The prosecutor played the security footage.
Frame by frame.
There was no argument left to make.
Before the judge announced the sentence, Evelyn asked for one chance to speak.
She looked toward Olivia.
"I never wanted to kill your baby."
Olivia held Adrian's hand.
"I know."
Evelyn looked surprised.
Olivia continued.
"You only wanted what I had."
She glanced down at her growing belly.
"But you never understood."
She smiled softly.
"It was never the villa."
"Never the company."
"Never the money."
She intertwined her fingers with Adrian's.
"It was always this."
A family.
One that couldn't be bought.
Couldn't be stolen.
And couldn't be pushed into the deep end.
Months later, a baby girl entered the world healthy and strong.
They named her Lily.
May you like
After the little girl whose scream had been loud enough...
...to save three lives instead of one.
