Chapter 8 - THE FAMILY SECRET

Arthur Cole lived in a small suburb outside Chicago.
When Claire and Ethan arrived, he wasn't surprised.
He opened the door and immediately said:
“You found the documents.”
Ethan stared.
“You knew?”
Arthur sighed.
“I've known for years.”
“Why?”
Arthur invited them inside.
He looked tired.
Not guilty.
Just exhausted.
“The trust was created before your grandmother died.”
“Why did nobody tell me?”
“Because your father wanted the house to remain yours.”
“What does Diane want?”
Arthur looked toward Ethan.
“Control.”
“Of what?”
“The property.”
“Why?”
“Because there is something beneath it.”
Silence.
Noah wasn't with them.
Claire had left him with a friend.
Ethan leaned forward.
“What?”
Arthur answered:
“A financial archive.”
Claire's pulse quickened.
“How much?”
“We don't know.”
“Then why does it matter?”
Arthur gave a bitter smile.
“Because your grandfather hid the records of several private investments there.”
“Some are worth hundreds of millions today.”
Ethan stared.
“That's why Mom wants the property.”
Arthur nodded.
“She believes the archive belongs to the Cole family.”
“But the trust says otherwise.”
“Correct.”
“So she's trying to alter ownership.”
“Yes.”
“Who helped her?”
Arthur looked at Claire.
“Your husband wasn't involved.”
Ethan exhaled.
At least one thing was clear.
Arthur continued:
“Diane has been working with an investment broker named Victor Hale.”
Claire's stomach tightened.
“The man who called me?”
“Probably.”
“Where is he?”
“New York.”
“Why?”
“He wants the archive too.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“Then the bank account wasn't the real target.”
“No.”
“They wanted access to the property.”
“And whatever is hidden beneath it.”
Arthur handed Claire a file.
Inside were photographs.
A basement.
Metal doors.
Storage rooms.
Old financial ledgers.
The final photograph showed Victor Hale standing beside Diane.
Claire stared.
The picture had been taken six months ago.
The same month Diane began asking questions about the house.
Arthur continued.
“They intended to force you to sell.”
“How?”
“By creating financial pressure.”
“Then Diane's transfers…”
“Were part of it.”
“They were trying to make you believe you couldn't afford the house.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
He lowered his eyes.
He finally understood why the money had disappeared from their joint account.
Diane had been moving money out slowly.
Trying to weaken Claire financially.
Then she could claim the house needed to be sold.
Claire felt a strange calm.
“Thank you.”
Arthur nodded.
“I should have told you sooner.”
“Why didn't you?”
“I promised your father.”
Claire stared.
“My father knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he keep silent?”
“Because he believed your marriage was stable.”
Claire laughed softly.
“That was his mistake.”
Arthur didn't disagree.
Before they left, he handed her one final envelope.
“Your father left this too.”
Claire opened it.
The letter was short.
Claire,
If Diane ever comes after the house, don't fight her alone.
Call the people who remember what the property was built to protect.
The archive is not the real inheritance.
The truth inside it is.
Claire looked up.
“What does that mean?”
Arthur shook his head.
“I don't know.”
May you like
Neither did Ethan.
But they were about to find out.
