Chapter 4 - THE MARRIAGE THEY HAD BEEN AVOIDING

Ethan met Claire at a quiet café near her office.
He looked different.
Less defensive.
More exhausted.
“I talked to Mom.”
“How did it go?”
“Badly.”
Claire waited.
“She says you're trying to destroy the family.”
“I assumed she might say that.”
“She says you've always hated her.”
“I never hated her.”
“I know.”
He looked at his coffee.
“I finally realized something.”
“What?”
“Every time she crossed a line, I explained why she did it.”
Claire said nothing.
“I told you she was stressed.”
“I know.”
“That she was lonely.”
“Yes.”
“That she was from another generation.”
“Yes.”
“That she didn't mean anything.”
Claire smiled sadly.
“You always had an explanation.”
“And I never had an answer for one question.”
“What question?”
“What did it feel like for you?”
Claire looked out the window.
“Small.”
He looked at her.
“Small?”
“Yes.”
“Like I had to earn the right to belong in my own house.”
Ethan's expression changed.
“I didn't know.”
“You didn't ask.”
That hurt him.
“I should have.”
“Yes.”
He reached across the table.
Then stopped.
“I am sorry.”
Claire didn't answer immediately.
He continued.
“Not because Mom got upset.”
“Not because you asked her to leave.”
“I'm sorry because I made you carry something that should have been my responsibility.”
Her eyes filled.
“That matters.”
“I know.”
He breathed slowly.
“She found an apartment.”
Claire blinked.
“Already?”
“She can afford it if I help with the deposit.”
“From your personal money?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Ethan smiled faintly.
“You're not angry?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because helping your mother is different from letting her control our home.”
He nodded.
“I understand now.”
There was a long pause.
“Can I come home?”
Claire looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because I want to be your husband.”
Not his mother's son.
Not her protector.
Her husband.
Claire finally smiled.
“Then come home.”
He returned that evening.
There was no dramatic reconciliation.
No kiss in the rain.
No promise that everything would magically be fixed.
He simply brought his suitcase upstairs.
May you like
They began again.
Slowly.
