Chapter 5 - DIANE'S APOLOGY

Two weeks later, Diane returned for the rest of her belongings.

Boxes filled the guest room.

Her coat was packed.

Her kitchen things were wrapped.

Her old photographs were placed in a folder.

She stood in the doorway.

“I shouldn't have said that to Noah.”

Claire looked at her.

“No.”

“I was angry.”

“That doesn't excuse it.”

“I know.”

Diane looked down.

“I felt embarrassed.”

“About what?”

She swallowed.

“Depending on you.”

Claire said nothing.

“For months, I told myself this was Ethan's home because saying it was yours made me feel ashamed.”

“You could have been honest.”

“I wasn't.”

Diane finally looked at her.

“I was jealous.”

“Of me?”

“Yes.”

Claire was surprised.

“You had a house.”

“A career.”

“Money.”

“A marriage.”

“I had a son.”

“And you thought you were losing him.”

Diane's eyes filled.

“I thought if I didn't control everything, he'd choose you and forget me.”

Claire slowly shook her head.

“He never had to choose.”

“That is what I finally understand.”

Diane took a breath.

“I am sorry.”

Claire believed her.

But forgiveness didn't mean reopening the guest room.

“Thank you for saying it.”

Diane nodded.

“I'm not asking to come back.”

“Good.”

For the first time, Diane laughed.

“You really have changed.”

“No.”

“I think I just finally stopped pretending.”

Diane left.

Ethan stood beside Claire.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

They watched her drive away.

The house became quiet again.

Noah came downstairs.

“Is she gone?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Claire laughed.

Then the three of them sat around the dining table.

Ethan served the chicken.

He looked at Noah.

“Take whatever piece you want.”

Noah smiled.

“Seriously?”

“Seriously.”

He chose the largest piece.

“Good choice.”

Claire watched them.

For four years, she had thought peace meant avoiding conflict.

Now she understood.

Real peace came after boundaries.

After honesty.

After people accepted responsibility.

That night, no one had to hide.

No one apologized for being hungry.

No one was asked to disappear.

And Claire finally understood that one small piece of chicken had exposed something far larger than a family argument.

It had exposed the difference between being tolerated and being loved.

May you like

And from that night forward, she refused to accept anything less than the latter.
