Chapter 8 - Noah Learns His Story

Years passed before Noah understood.
At five, he knew Uncle Gabriel loved him.
At seven, he met Rebecca regularly.
At ten, he asked why he had three adults who cried whenever people discussed his birth.
Elena told him.
Not everything.
Enough.
“You grew inside me.”
“Yes.”
“Rebecca made the embryo?”
“With Gabriel.”
“So Uncle Gabriel is my biological dad?”
“Yes.”
“Is Victor my dad?”
Elena paused.
“He was legally your father when you were born.”
Noah thought.
“But not now?”
“No.”
“Do I have to call Gabriel Dad?”
“No.”
“Can I?”
“If you ever want.”
Noah nodded.
Then returned to his cereal.
Children sometimes handle complicated truths better than adults who build entire empires to avoid them.
Two years later, Noah called Gabriel Dad for the first time.
Gabriel went into the bathroom and cried.

Nobody teased him.
