Chapter 2 - The Baby Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

Noah was admitted to St. Matthew’s Hospital at 10:18 p.m.
Severe viral infection.
Dangerous dehydration.
But treatable.
Elena sat beside his crib while doctors worked.
Gabriel remained outside the room.
She had not hugged him.
Not yet.
She wanted to.
She also wanted to scream.
Three years believing him dead could not disappear because he walked through a ballroom door.
Eventually Elena stepped into the hallway.
Gabriel stood.
She slapped him.
Hard.
Security nearby glanced over.
Gabriel did not move.
“That was for being alive.”
“I deserve that.”
Another slap.
“That was for letting me bury an empty coffin.”
“I deserve that too.”
Then Elena collapsed into him.
Gabriel caught her.
For the first time since she was a child, Elena cried against her brother’s chest.
“Where were you?”
“Running.”
“From whom?”
He looked toward Noah’s room.
“The Hales.”
Elena pulled away.
“What happened?”
Gabriel explained.
Four years earlier, before Elena married Victor, Gabriel worked for a private biomedical security company.
One client:
Hale Reproductive Institute.
He discovered stolen genetic material.
Eggs.
Embryos.
Sperm samples.
Medical identities.
Wealthy clients paid enormous sums for illegal genetic-selection programs.
Gabriel started gathering evidence.
Then met Dr. Rebecca Lang.
A fertility specialist.
Whistleblower.
They became close.
Then lovers.
Rebecca secretly preserved an embryo they had created during fertility treatment after discovering she carried a genetic condition that made pregnancy dangerous.
Before they could decide what to do—
Rebecca disappeared.
Gabriel assumed Hale security took her.
Then someone tried to kill him.
He survived.
Barely.
Victor reported him dead.
Gabriel stayed hidden while gathering evidence overseas.
Elena whispered:
“And my embryo transfer?”
Gabriel looked sick.
“Your original embryos failed.”
She knew that.
“Victor needed you pregnant.”
“Why?”
“The Hale family trust.”
Of course there was a trust.
Victor could only inherit controlling shares in Hale Medical after producing a legally recognized heir within five years of marriage.
Elena stared.
“So they gave me someone else’s embryo.”
“Yes.”
“Why yours?”
Gabriel’s voice became quieter.
“Because they already had access.”
Then:
“And because they thought I was dead.”
No witness.
No biological father demanding answers.
No Rebecca.
Perfect stolen child.
Except Gabriel survived.
And returned.
Elena looked through the glass at Noah.
“Does Rebecca know?”
Gabriel went silent.
Her heart tightened.
“Gabriel.”
“She’s alive.”
Elena stared.
“What?”
“I found her six months ago.”
“Where?”
“A psychiatric facility in Switzerland.”
Elena covered her mouth.
“They kept her there?”
“Under another name.”
“Why?”
“She knew everything.”
The Hales had declared Rebecca unstable after she attempted to expose the clinic.
False medical records.
Legal guardianship.
Sedation.
Isolation.
Same system they later used against Elena.
Elena whispered:
“Where is she now?”
“Safe.”
“Does she know about Noah?”
Gabriel’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“And?”
“She wants to meet you.”
Elena looked toward her son.
Not theirs biologically.
But hers in every other way.
She carried him.
Felt his first kick.
Nearly died delivering him.
Stayed awake through every fever.
Sang to him every night.
Would Rebecca want him?
Would Gabriel?
Would they take him?
Gabriel read her fear.
“No.”
“What?”
“No one is taking Noah from you.”
“But he’s your biological son.”
“He’s your son.”
Elena cried.
“How can you say that?”
“Because biology is a fact.”
Gabriel looked through the window.
“Parenthood is what happens after.”
That sentence saved something inside her.
Then Gabriel’s phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His expression hardened.
“What?”
Elena asked.
“Hale Manor.”
May you like
“What about it?”
“Victor is burning documents.”
