Chapter 3 - The Rebellion of the Family

Julian didn't move. He stood paralyzed between the pride of his bruised ego and the sudden rebellion of his extended family. Two of his cousins—rough-handed men who worked in construction—exchanged a grim look, stepped past him, and hauled a cushioned armchair out from the dining room set, placing it gently beside me.

Sarah didn't wait for Julian to recover. She knelt beside me, ignoring the dust on her uniform, and gently slid her hands beneath my arms. “I’ve got you,” she whispered softly, her warmth anchoring me against the rising panic in my chest. “Just lean your weight on me. We’re getting you out of here.”

With a collective effort that drew gasps from the relatives watching, Sarah and one of the female cousins hoisted me into the clean armchair. The moment my weight shifted off the floor, a sharp, white-hot spasm shot up from my left ankle. I bit down on my lower lip so hard I tasted copper, my breath hitching in my throat.

“Breathe, mama,” Sarah instructed quietly, her fingers instantly checking my pulse rate at my wrist while simultaneously evaluating the swelling of my abdomen. “The contractions aren’t active yet, but your body is under severe stress. We are leaving right now.”

Eleanor rushed forward, her face twisted in rage. “You can’t just take her! This is our grandson’s—our four grandchildren’s—celebration! She’s making a scene to steal the spotlight!”

“Eleanor, shut your mouth,” Aunt Beatrice commanded, rising from her seat with a surprising agility. She walked over, planting herself squarely between Eleanor and my chair. For thirty years, Eleanor had ruled this family through loud manipulation and financial intimidation, but Beatrice had inherited the family trust. When Beatrice spoke with that tone, doors closed. “Your son is a fool, and you are a tyrant. I watched you kick that girl’s ankle. I sat right there by the corner table. I didn't say anything because I thought she was just being clumsy, but you forced her down. If you take one more step toward her, I will call our family lawyer and rewrite the property trusts before sunset.”

Eleanor turned chalk-white. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. “Beatrice, you wouldn’t—they’re our family blood—”

“They are my great-nieces and nephews,” Beatrice corrected coldly, “and their mother is getting medical attention right now.”

Julian finally snapped out of his stupor. He lunged forward, grabbing the handle of Sarah’s medical kit. “You’re not going anywhere. That’s my wife. Those are my babies. You need my legal consent to take her off this property!”

Sarah looked at Julian with an expression of profound, icy pity. “Mr. Vance, under Section 4 of the Medical Emergency and Patient Protection Act, interference with a licensed healthcare professional executing an emergency evacuation order constitutes a federal offense punishable by immediate arrest. Furthermore, given that your wife is a victim of domestic abuse and physical assault resulting in bodily harm during a high-risk pregnancy, I have already used my emergency transmitter to dispatch local law enforcement and an ambulance.”

As if on cue, the faint, rising howl of sirens cut through the suburban afternoon air, growing louder with every passing second.

Claire turned completely pale. She dropped my hospital bag onto the sofa, grabbed her designer purse, and bolted toward the back patio door, scrambling to escape before the police arrived. Julian watched her flee, his mouth agape, realizing in a single horrifying second that his carefully constructed double life was collapsing into ruin.
