Chapter 6 - The Winter Gala

The month of December brought snow to the estate, turning the sprawling acres of grounds into a breathtaking white winter wonderland. The trees were draped in heavy blankets of snow, and the grand fountains in the courtyard were frozen into shimmering ice sculptures.

Inside the Duke manor, preparations were underway for the annual Winter Charity Gala. Historically, this event was a cold, transactional corporate affair—a night where politicians, industrial titans, and high-society elites gathered to drink expensive champagne, trade influence, and inspect my solitary existence.

But this year was different.

For the first time in thirty years, the manor felt truly alive. Christmas trees reaching fifteen feet high stood in the grand hall and the main ballroom, decorated with thousands of twinkling warm lights and hand-crafted silver ornaments. The air smelled of pine, cinnamon, and rich cocoa.

In the master suite on the second floor, I stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror, adjusting the black bow tie of my formal tuxedo.

A quiet knock came at the door, followed by the soft opening of the latch.

Maria stepped into the room.

My hands froze on my collar. I simply stared at her through the mirror.

She wore a custom-made midnight-blue silk gown that off-shouldered gracefully, sweeping the floor with an elegant train. Her dark hair was styled up in an intricate, sophisticated undo, held in place by a subtle sapphire hairpiece that matched the exact color of her eyes. She wore no loud jewelry—only a simple pair of diamond stud earrings I had gifted her the previous week.

She looked breathtaking. She looked like a queen.

"Is... is it too much?" Maria asked nervously, smoothing her hands down the front of the gown. "I’m not used to dressing like this, Logan. What if your guests..."

I turned around, walking slowly across the room until I stood directly in front of her. I took her small, gloved hands in mine and raised them to my lips, kissing the back of her fingers.

"My guests will be completely humiliated," I said softly, looking into her eyes. "Because none of them will be able to take their eyes off the most magnificent woman in the room."

Maria blushed deeply, a brilliant, beautiful smile illuminating her face. "You always know what to say to make me feel safe."

"I only speak the truth," I replied.

A tiny cough came from near the door frame.

We both looked down. Lily was standing there, looking like a little princess in a puffy white velvet dress with a red satin sash around her waist. She was wearing miniature shiny black shoes, and in her arms, as always, was Mr. Bun-Bun, who now wore a tiny red bow tie that Maria had sewn onto him.

"Look, Mommy! Look, Logan!" Lily squeaked, spinning in a little circle. "I’m a snow fairy!"

I laughed, dropping to one knee before the little girl. "You are the most important snow fairy in the entire castle, Lily."

"Is Bruno a fairy too?" she asked innocently.

Right on cue, Bruno padded into the room. My security team had humorously placed a temporary plaid holiday collar around his neck. The massive Doberman sat next to Lily, looking absurdly majestic despite the festive collar.

"Bruno is the fairy guardian," I told her, gently tweaking her nose. "And his job tonight is to make sure you eat your vegetables at dinner."

Lily made a funny face, making Maria and me laugh together.

"Sir?" My private assistant, Thomas, appeared at the doorway, holding a clipboard. "The first guests have arrived at the front gate. Lord Sterling, the Minister of Finance, and the ambassadors from France and Japan are in the main hall."

I stood up, offering my arm to Maria. "Shall we show them how much this house has changed?"

Maria looked at me, taking a deep breath. The last remnant of self-doubt disappeared from her posture. She placed her hand gracefully over my forearm, standing tall and proud beside me.

"Let’s go," she said softly.

We walked down the grand marble staircase together.

Below, in the bustling hall, dozens of wealthy, influential figures were mingling. As we descended the stairs—Logan Duke, the feared and icy corporate giant, carrying a smiling four-year-old girl on his shoulder, with an ethereal, stunning woman on his arm and a terrifying Doberman walking peacefully behind them—the entire hall fell silent.

Gasp of astonishment swept through the crowd. Whispers echoed among the high-society elite.

For years, people had speculated who would eventually capture the heart of Logan Duke. They expected a foreign princess, an heiress to a banking dynasty, or a high-powered corporate lawyer.

Instead, I brought them the woman who had brought light back into my dark life.

Lord Sterling, a silver-haired statesman who had known my father, stepped forward with a warm, genuine smile, holding up his glass of champagne.

"Logan, my boy," Sterling said, his voice carrying over the crowd. "We heard rumors that life at the Duke estate had changed. But I have never seen you look so... human."

May you like

I smiled—a genuine, open smile that shocked half the board members in the room.

"It turns out, Sterling," I said, looking down at Maria, whose hand was resting softly against my chest, "that I was just waiting for the right people to show me what home actually means."
