Chapter 4 - The Whispers of the Past

Three months passed, transforming the atmosphere within the Duke estate from a solemn fortress into something resembling a home. The heavy, oppressive silence that once filled the endless corridors was now routinely broken by the pitter-patter of small feet, the deep, contented huffs of Bruno following his tiny human ward, and the soft, melodious laughter of Maria as she managed the household with gentle efficiency.
Under Maria’s management, the estate ran smoother than it ever had under Rebecca’s iron, fearful reign. The domestic staff was no longer terrified; they were loyal, well-paid, and respected. Maria had a natural intelligence and grace that far exceeded her previous position. I quickly realized she was not just an honest woman, but an incredibly capable one. Within eight weeks, I had moved her from overseeing housecleaning to managing the entire domestic staff and estate logistics.
Yet, despite the newfound peace, shadows from the past had a habit of lingering.
It was a chilly Tuesday evening in November. Rain washed against the tall glass windows of my ground-floor library. I sat at my massive cherrywood desk, reviewing international trade reports, while Lily sat on a plush Persian rug near the fireplace, meticulously drawing pictures with a box of oversized crayons. Bruno lay sprawled beside her, acting as an oversized footrest.
Maria entered quietly, carrying a silver tray with a pot of fresh black coffee and a small plate of warm pastries.
"You're working late again, Logan," she said softy.
Over the past few weeks, at my insistence, she had dropped the formal "Mr. Duke" when we were in private quarters. Watching her walk into the room, dressed in an elegant dark emerald dress—a gift I had bought her for the autumn gala—I felt a familiar, subtle warmth spread through my chest.
"Just clearing out the quarterly reports," I said, setting my pen down and offering her a rare, relaxed smile. "How is the west wing renovation coming along?"
"It’s almost complete," Maria smiled, pouring a cup of coffee and handing it to me. Her fingers brushed against mine, sending a subtle spark through my nerves that neither of us acknowledged, though her cheeks flushed slightly. "The light in the new playroom is wonderful. Lily adores it."
"Coffee man!" Lily called out from the floor, holding up a piece of paper covered in scribbled green and black lines. "Look! It’s Bruno eating a dragon!"
I chuckled, leaning over my desk to examine the masterpiece. "That is an exceptionally accurate drawing of Bruno, Lily. Though I think the dragon looks a bit like Lord Harrington."
Maria stifled a giggle, stepping closer to look at the drawing. For a moment, we stood side-by-side in the warm glow of the firelight. It was a picture of domestic tranquility that I would have found unimaginable six months ago.
Then, my desk phone buzzed.
The sharp, sudden ring cut through the warm atmosphere. I picked up the receiver. "Logan here."
"Sir, it’s Arthur from security at the main gate," the guard’s voice sounded tight, uneasy. "We have a situation. There is a man here demanding entrance. He’s causing a scene, claiming he has a legal right to see Maria and the child."
My eyes immediately flicked to Maria, whose smile instantly froze. The color drained from her face as if she had heard a ghost.
"Did he give a name?" I asked, my voice instantly hardening back into the cold tone of the corporate titan.
"He says his name is Julian Vance—no relation to Harrington’s lawyer, sir. He claims he is Lily’s biological father."
A cold, vicious anger flared instantly behind my ribs.
I looked at Maria. She had stepped back from the desk, her hands clutching her chest, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror.
"Maria?" I asked softly, setting the phone down on speaker mode. "Who is he?"
"He... he abandoned us," Maria whispered, her voice trembling violently. "Four years ago... before Lily was born. He was a gambler, Logan. He took every cent of my savings, left me with debts I didn't owe, and vanished when he found out I was pregnant. I haven't seen or heard from him since."
"Why now?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.
"Because he saw the news," Maria said, a bitter tear escaping her eye. "The press coverage from the Harrington scandal... there were photos of you taking Lily and me to the charity auction last month. He knows I work here now. He thinks... he thinks there’s money to be made."
On the speakerphone, the guard’s voice crackled again. "Sir? He’s getting aggressive. He’s holding what looks like a legal birth certificate and threatening to call the press and file kidnapping charges if we don't open the gate."
Lily looked up from her drawing, sensing her mother’s distress. She scrambled to her feet and rushed over, burying her face in Maria’s skirts. Bruno stood up instantly, his ears flattened, a dangerous rumble rising in his throat.
I stood up from behind my desk, buttoning my suit jacket.
"Let him in," I commanded the guard coldly.
"Sir?" the guard sounded surprised.
"Drive him up to the main house," I said, my voice echoing with absolute authority. "I’ll meet him in the courtyard."
I hung up the phone. I walked over to Maria, placing a firm, steady hand on her shoulder. She was shaking.
"He can't take her, Logan," she sobbed, looking up at me with desperate, pleading eyes. "He has no right. He never cared for her!"
"He isn't taking anyone, Maria," I said softly, looking down into her eyes with an intensity that made her breath catch. "You and Lily are under my protection. No one enters this house to harm you. Ever."
I looked down at Lily, reaching out to pat her head gently. "Stay here with your mother, sweetheart. Bruno, stay."
May you like
The dog sat back down, placing himself firmly between Maria, Lily, and the door.
I turned and walked out of the library, heading toward the grand entrance to deal with a ghost from the past.
