Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest

The headlights of a beat-up rental sedan swept across the wet stone cobblestones of the courtyard as the gate security vehicle escorted the unwanted guest up the winding driveway.

I stood on the covered marble porch, sheltered from the light rain, my hands resting casually in the pockets of my tailored wool overcoat. Two heavy-set security guards stood a few paces behind me, silent shadows in the dim exterior lights.

The rental car came to a jerky stop. A man stepped out, slamming the door behind him.

Julian Vance was in his early thirties, dressed in an ill-fitting designer jacket that looked like it had been purchased third-hand to project an image of wealth he clearly did not possess. His hair was slicked back, his eyes darting frantically around the staggering wealth of the Duke estate—the sprawling mansions, the manicured gardens, the fleet of luxury vehicles parked in the side garages. Greed was written into every line of his face.

"Are you Duke?" Julian called out, marching up the stone steps with a swagger that was entirely forced. "Where is Maria? Where’s my daughter?"

I didn't move an inch. I looked down at him from the top of the stairs, letting the silence stretch until his swagger began to falter under my unblinking glare.

"You are standing on private property, Mr. Vance," I said, my voice flat, carrying effortlessly over the sound of the rain. "You have thirty seconds to explain why I shouldn't have my security team throw you into the road."

Julian pulled a crumpled set of papers from his jacket pocket, waving them in the air defensively. "I have a right to be here! That's my kid inside! I’m Lily’s biological father, and Maria has been keeping her from me! I saw the papers—you’ve got my child playing happy family in your mansion! You think because you’re a billionaire you can just buy someone else’s family?"

"You abandoned Maria when she was three months pregnant," I stated calmly, stepping down one stair. "You cleared her bank account, forged her signature on a twenty-thousand-dollar personal loan, and left her to face eviction alone. You haven't paid a single cent of child support in four years. You haven't sent a card, a call, or a thought."

Julian’s eyes flashed with anger, but he quickly tried to adjust his strategy, forcing a sad, desperate expression onto his face. "I was young! I made mistakes! I was in debt to dangerous people and I had to run to protect them! But I’ve changed, Duke. I want to be a father now. And unless Maria wants me to take this to the family courts and ruin your pretty little reputation with a massive custody battle in the press, she’s going to talk to me. Or better yet... maybe you and I can come to an agreement."

There it was. The real reason he was here.

"An agreement?" I asked, taking another step down.

Julian smirked, thinking he had found my pressure point. "Look, man to man. You’re a busy guy. You like Maria, she’s a pretty girl, whatever. But you don't want a messy legal fight dragging your name through the tabloids. 'Billionaire Logan Duke Steals Child From Poor Father.' It looks bad. You pay off my remaining debts—say, two million dollars—and I sign away my parental rights forever. I walk away, you keep the kid, everyone wins."

I stopped at the bottom step, standing just two feet from him. I towered over him by half a head.

"Two million dollars," I repeated slowly.

"A drop in the bucket for you," Julian sneered, gaining confidence. "Otherwise, I file for emergency custody tomorrow morning. I’ll make her life a living hell."

I leaned in slightly, my eyes locking onto his with a force that made his smirk instantly vanish.

"Three weeks ago," I said in a dangerous whisper, "I had Lord Edward Harrington’s multi-billion-dollar empire dismantled in less than twelve hours because he thought he could blackmail me."

Julian swallowed hard, taking a involuntary step back.

"Do you really think," I continued, "that a small-time loan shark, a deadbeat gambler with three outstanding warrants for check fraud in Nevada, poses a threat to me?"

Julian’s face went chalk-white. "How... how do you know about Nevada?"

"I knew who you were the second my security gate called your name," I said. "My intelligence team runs background checks on every person who breathes near my property. I know about the casino debts in Reno. I know about the fake identity you used in Oregon. And I know that the police in Las Vegas have been looking for you for eighteen months."

I stepped closer, forcing him back against his car.

"If you ever speak Maria’s name again," I said, my tone as cold and sharp as crushed ice, "if you so much as glance in the direction of her or Lily, I will personally fund the prosecution of every single crime you’ve committed since the day you turned eighteen. You will spend the next twenty years in a maximum-security state penitentiary."

"You... you can't do that!" Julian squeaked, his confidence utterly shattered.

"Try me," I said.

I looked at the two security officers. "Escort Mr. Vance to the main gate. If his vehicle breaks down on my road, tow it into the river."

"Yes, sir!" the guards responded in unison, stepping forward aggressively.

Julian didn't wait for them to grab him. He scrambled back into his rental car, hit the ignition with trembling hands, slammed the vehicle into reverse, and sped wildly down the winding driveway, his tires screeching violently against the wet asphalt.

I stood in the courtyard for a moment, watching the red taillights vanish into the dark rain.

When I returned to the library, Maria was standing near the fireplace, clutching her hands nervously. Lily had fallen asleep on the sofa, wrapped in a plush wool blanket, with Bruno curled up at her feet like a silent dragon guarding a treasure.

Maria looked at me, her eyes filled with agonizing anxiety. "Is... is he gone?"

"He's gone," I said softly, shutting the heavy library doors behind me. "And he is never coming back."

Maria let out a long, shuddering breath. Her knees seemed to buckle under the sudden release of tension. I moved quickly across the room, catching her by her waist before she could fall.

She collapsed against my chest, burying her face in the crook of my neck, her hands gripping my suit jacket tightly as quiet tears of relief soaked into the fabric.

"Thank you," she sobbed softly. "Thank you, Logan... you saved us again."

I didn't let go. I wrapped my arms securely around her, resting my chin gently against her soft hair.

"You don't have to thank me, Maria," I murmured, my voice softer than it had ever been in my entire life. "You and Lily... you belong here. With me."

She pulled back slightly, looking up into my eyes. The fear was gone, replaced by something deep, profound, and undeniable.

May you like

I reached up, my thumb gently wiping away a tear from her cheek. Then, slowly, giving her every chance to step away, I leaned down and kissed her.

Her lips were soft, warm, and sweet. She melted into the kiss, her hands moving up to clasp around my neck. The icy walls I had spent a lifetime building around my heart didn't just crack—they completely shattered, leaving behind a warmth I knew would never leave me again.
