Chapter 7 - ECHOES OF THE PAST

Despite our new beginning, shadows of the old world occasionally tried to creep back into the light.
Four months after the wedding, a remnant faction of the old Romano family—led by Eduardo's estranged younger brother, Vincent Romano—attempted to reassert control over the waterfront distribution networks. Vincent believed that my transition into legitimate corporate operations had made me soft, assuming that a Don who spent his weekends playing in West Village parks was no longer capable of defending his territory.
Late on a rainy Tuesday evening, Marco entered my Long Island library while I was reviewing the quarterly financial statements for the Moretti Educational Foundation.
"Vincent Romano just seized a shipment of medical supplies at Pier 14," Marco reported, his voice dropping into that familiar, dangerous tone from our past. "He brought eight armed men and took two of our union dock managers hostage. He left a message saying he wants fifty million in cash or he burns the pier to the ground."
I didn't lose my temper. I didn't raise my voice. I simply placed my fountain pen on the desk and stood up.
"Did he use the old Romano frequency to send the message?" I asked quietly.
"Yes," Marco confirmed.
"Then he still thinks we're playing by the old rules," I said, walking over to the coat rack and pulling on my heavy dark trench coat. "Assemble the primary response team. We're going to Pier 14."
Twenty minutes later, three black SUVs pulled up silently to the darkened perimeter of Pier 14 under a heavy downpour. The rain drummed relentlessly against the shipping containers as Marco and twelve tactical officers spread out across the dockyard, moving like shadows through the storm.
Inside the main warehouse, Vincent Romano stood near a stack of wooden crates, holding a heavy pistol and shouting orders at his terrified hostages.
"Alessandro Moretti is weak!" Vincent yelled to his men, his voice echoing off the high tin roof. "He gave up his bloodline for a maid and a child! Tonight, we take back what belongs to the Romano name!"
"The Romano name belongs to the federal penal system, Vincent," my voice echoed from the dark rafters above.
Vincent spun around, raising his weapon wildly toward the ceiling. "Show yourself, Moretti!"
Before Vincent could locate my position, Marco's team breached the side doors, casting high-powered tactical spotlights directly into the eyes of Vincent’s men.
"Federal marshals and Moretti Security! Drop your weapons!" Marco bellowed over a loudspeaker.
Panicked by the sudden, overwhelming display of tactical precision, Vincent’s men dropped their weapons instantly, raising their hands into the air. Vincent tried to raise his gun toward the light, but I stepped out from the shadows directly behind him, disarming him with a single, fluid wrist-lock that sent his pistol clattering across the wet concrete floor.
I forced Vincent to his knees, holding his collar tightly as tactical officers moved in to secure his men.
"You thought I became soft, Vincent?" I whispered into his ear over the sound of the rain. "I didn't get soft. I got dangerous, because now I actually have something in this world worth protecting."
Federal agents, who had been monitoring our tactical feed under our new cooperative security agreement, entered the warehouse minutes later to process the arrests.
As Vincent was dragged away in heavy chains, he glared back at me with bitter disbelief. "You sold out the family code, Moretti!"
May you like
"The family code was a lie designed by greedy men," I answered flatly, turning my back on him. "My family is safe. Yours is extinct."
By midnight, Pier 14 was completely secured, the hostages were unharmed and reunited with their families, and the last remnant of the Romano threat was permanently erased from the city of New York.
