Chapter 4 - SHADOWS IN THE NORTH WING

The north wing of the estate housed my private art collection and opened out onto an elevated concrete terrace overlooking the jagged ocean cliffs below.
As I moved with silent, practiced speed through the dimly lit hallway, the sharp smell of burnt gunpowder hung heavy in the air. The massive iron-trimmed oak doors leading to the exterior terrace had been breached, swinging loosely on broken hinges in the ocean breeze.
From outside, the deafening, rhythmic chop of heavy helicopter rotors echoed off the stone walls as the aircraft’s engine whined up to full power.
Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump.
I flattened my back against the marble archway inside the doorway, listening closely to the voices shouting over the roar of the blades.
“Hurry up and load the primary server drives!” Eduardo’s harsh voice barked over the engine noise. “Julian, where are the encrypted access keys?”
“I have them right here!” Julian screamed back, his voice trembling hysterically. “I pulled the physical hard drives from Alessandro’s private office safe before the tactical team locked down the lower floor!”
I stepped out from behind the marble archway into the full, blinding sunlight of the terrace.
“You didn't pull a single real file, Julian,” I called out, my deep voice cutting clearly through the roar of the spinning helicopter blades.
Eduardo, Isabella, and Julian spun around in shock. Four Romano mercenaries immediately raised their tactical rifles, training their barrels directly on my chest.
I didn't flinch or take a step back. Behind me, fifteen of my top Moretti security officers emerged silently from the gallery corridors, their high-powered assault rifles raised in disciplined firing stances. Bright red laser sights instantly painted the chests and heads of every mercenary standing on the concrete pad.
“Drop your weapons right now,” I commanded with absolute calm. “Or this helipad becomes a mass grave in three seconds.”
The Romano mercenaries looked down at the bright red laser dots dancing across their tactical vests, then looked back at Eduardo’s pale face. Slowly, deliberately, one by one, they lowered their rifles to the concrete and raised their open hands into the air.
“You useless fools! Shoot him!” Isabella shrieked, snatching a heavy pistol from her father’s leather holster.
Before she could raise the barrel toward me, Marco fired a single, masterful shot from thirty yards away.
THWIP!
The silenced round struck the frame of the handgun, shattering the metal grip straight out of Isabella’s hand! The force sent the weapon flying over the edge of the stone balustrade, plunging into the dark, churning ocean waves hundreds of feet below. Isabella shrieked in pain, clutching her bruised wrist as she fell onto her knees on the pad.
Eduardo stood utterly frozen, his face dark with bitter defeat as my tactical officers swarmed the helipad, forcing the mercenaries to the ground and securing their wrists with heavy zip-ties.
Julian dropped his leather briefcase, falling to his knees on the concrete and crawling toward my boots like a desperate animal.
“Alessandro! Please! Have mercy!” Julian wept, pressing his forehead against the stone floor. “I was forced into this! Eduardo threatened to execute my entire family! I swear on our grandfather's soul!”
I looked down at my cousin with cold disgust.
“You traded a widow’s life and a helpless three-year-old child’s safety for a percentage of a stolen shipping port,” I said, kicking his trembling hands away from my leather shoes. “You aren't a Moretti, Julian. You’re just a pathetic coward in an expensive suit.”
Marco stepped forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists, yanked him up by his collar, and dragged him toward the waiting interior guards.
I walked slowly over to where Eduardo and Isabella were being restrained on the pavement by my officers.
Eduardo glared up at me with pure, unadulterated venom. “You think you’ve won something today, Moretti? You think stopping a wedding makes you untouchable? My network in Chicago will tear your distribution channels apart by tomorrow morning!”
“Your network in Chicago was taken into federal custody forty-five minutes ago,” I revealed calmly, pulling a thin satellite phone from my pocket. “The moment Emma told me about Thomas Vance’s death, I had my legal council contact the Federal Organized Crime Task Force in Illinois. They recovered Thomas’s original audit files from a secure safe deposit box in downtown Chicago.”
Eduardo’s eyes widened in sheer, helpless horror.
“The murder of Thomas Vance, the kidnapping and extortion of Sophia Vance, and thirty years of international money laundering,” I added flatly. “You, your daughter, and every lieutenant in your organization are going to spend the remainder of your lives in a maximum-security federal facility.”

Down the long driveway, the blare of federal law enforcement sirens echoed off the surrounding trees as dozens of black sedans and armored tactical vans turned into the estate, their red and blue lights flashing against the white mansion walls.
I turned my back on the traitors, walking away from the helipad into the quiet mansion as federal agents moved in to take final custody of the Romano organization.
