Chapter 2 - THE UNMASKING AT THE CHAPEL

I turned my head slowly away from the tactical tablet’s glowing screen and fixed my gaze directly on my cousin, Julian Moretti.
Julian stood on the raised marble platform of the chapel wearing a custom tuxedo identical to mine. His slicked-back hair glinted in the sunlight, but a cold, nervous sweat was beginning to form along his hairline and top lip. For five years, Julian had served as my primary legal strategist, managing our family’s extensive real estate holdings, legitimate harbor corporations, and complex offshore investment trusts. I had trusted him with the keys to my estate, my legal immunity, and my life.
When Julian saw me slowly turn my head toward him, his eyes widened in sheer panic, darting nervously toward the estate’s heavy iron entrance gates two hundred yards away.
“Alessandro...” Julian stammered, his voice higher than usual as he took a small step backward and raised his hands in a defensive gesture, trying to force a light chuckle. “Whatever garbage Marco is playing for you on that tablet, it’s a complete fabrication. You know how these rival syndicates operate—they use doctored media and deepfakes to ruin strategic alliances right before a merger! You can't honestly believe this nonsense!”
“Is it a fabrication, Julian?” I said, my voice dropping into a register so dark and quiet that it chilled the air around us.
I stepped onto the marble altar platform, closing the six-foot gap between us in two heavy, deliberate strides. Before Julian could react, I reached out and grabbed him firmly by the lapels of his designer tuxedo jacket, yanking him forward with effortless force and lifting his feet two inches off the stone floor.
The crowd erupted in collective shock. Women shrieked, and several men stood up from their chairs. Don Eduardo Romano rushed forward from the front row, flanked by four heavily armed personal bodyguards who reached inside their dark jackets.
“Alessandro! What is the meaning of this outrageous insult?” Eduardo bellowed, his face turning red with anger as his hand rested on the grip of his concealed firearm. “You dare disrespect my daughter, my bloodline, and my family in front of the entire city over the nonsensical fabrications of a servant’s toddler?”
“Touch the grip of your gun, Eduardo, and my men will paint this entire courtyard red in five seconds flat,” Marco warned coldly, unholstering his custom sidearm and aiming the barrel straight at Eduardo’s chest.
Instantly, twenty elite Moretti security guards positioned around the perimeter drew their tactical weapons in unison, stepping forward to surround the three hundred seated guests.
Panicked gasps echoed through the rows as high-society guests ducked beneath their velvet seats to avoid potential crossfire.
I held Julian suspended in the air, looking straight into his trembling, bloodshot eyes.
“The recovered video shows you handing Isabella the master asset transfer deeds for our deep-water commercial ports,” I told Julian flatly, my voice echoing off the stone chapel walls. “The exact legal deeds that require two primary Moretti signatures to authorize a sale. You gave her my late father’s private security seal from the estate safe.”
Julian’s face went from pale to a ghastly, translucent white. “Alessandro... listen to me... you don't understand the pressure I was under... they threatened my life! The Romanos... they forced me into this!”
“You lying, spineless coward!” Isabella shrieked from the middle of the central aisle.
She threw her cascading orchid bouquet violently onto the white silk runner, reaching up with both hands to tear off her diamond lace veil in a fit of uncontrollable rage. Her calm, elegant aristocratic persona completely vanished, replaced by a bitter, vicious sneer that distorted her features.
“You pathetic, incompetent idiot, Julian!” Isabella screamed at my cousin, her eyes flashing with pure malice. “You swore to me that you had permanently wiped the main library servers twelve hours ago! You guaranteed that your brute of a cousin would sign those asset transfer documents at the reception table before he ever realized what he was reading!”
The absolute, undeniable truth hung suspended over the courtyard like a toxic cloud.
My mother, Clara, sank deeper into her velvet seat in the front row, covering her face with her trembling hands and weeping uncontrollably.
I released my grip on Julian’s lapels, letting him drop onto the stone flags with a heavy, humiliating thud. He scrambled backward like a panicked crab, clutching his throat and breathing heavily.
I stepped off the marble platform and walked slowly down the aisle toward Isabella. The three hundred guests watched in petrified silence as the most feared Don in New York closed the space between himself and his deceitful bride.
“Where is Thomas Vance, Sophia’s husband?” I asked Isabella, my voice as cold and heavy as pig iron.
Isabella straightened her spine, adjusting the pearl-embroidered bodice of her gown, giving me a cold, arrogant, defiant smirk. “Why don't you ask your beloved mother, Alessandro? Or better yet, ask my father! Thomas Vance wasn't just some random construction worker in Chicago. He was a senior forensic auditor who discovered that the Romano family had been systematically laundering hundreds of millions through your father’s charitable foundations for over a decade!”
I froze in my tracks, turning my head slowly toward my weeping mother.
“Mother?” I asked, the single word heavy with painful disbelief.
Clara looked up, tears streaming down her aging, wrinkled face. “I... I only tried to protect you, Alessandro!” she sobbed hysterically. “When your father passed away three years ago, Eduardo came to my house. He told me that Thomas Vance had uncovered records that would cause federal indictments to destroy both our families forever! Eduardo promised me that if Thomas vanished quietly, the Romano family would use all their political power to back you as the unquestioned Don of New York! I didn't know... I swear to Almighty God I didn't know they forced his poor wife to work here as a servant to keep her under surveillance!”
The web of treachery stretched wide around me, entangling my past, my family’s legacy, and the sanctity of my home.
Sophia Vance had not come to my estate looking for a fresh start. She had been brought here under duress, forced to live under Isabella’s constant, cruel surveillance, threatened every single day that if she uttered a single word to me, her three-year-old daughter would suffer the exact same fate as her husband.
I turned my face back to Isabella, my eyes narrowing. “You brought the widow of the man your father murdered into my house... to hold a knife to her child’s throat?”
“It was practical efficiency,” Isabella hissed softly, leaning forward so only I could hear her words over the sound of the wind. “She stayed silent because she loved her child more than her own life. And you were so obsessed with expanding your commercial shipping empire that you didn't notice a single thing happening right beneath your own roof! Today, I was going to become the primary legal executor of the Moretti accounts. Tomorrow night, you were going to suffer a tragic, unexplainable accident—just like your father did three years ago.”
A dark, blinding fury flared in my chest, but before I could utter a response, the heavy iron security gates at the end of the estate’s main driveway suddenly blew apart with a deafening EXPLOSION!
