Chapter 4 - The Account Called HelenThe agents searched until after midnight.

Before leaving, Rachel asked me to come to the federal building the next morning.
“There is something connected to you,” she said.
I barely slept.
At nine, Diego met me outside the building.
He carried the blue folder that had started everything.
“You did well last night,” he said.
“I sat quietly while my daughter’s life collapsed.”
“You gave her a chance to understand what was collapsing it.”
Inside, Rachel led us into a conference room.
A forensic accountant named Aaron Blake projected a transaction map onto the wall.
Dozens of companies connected to Harbor Ridge appeared as circles and lines.
Silver Pine Holdings.
Mountain Crest Development.
Ridgeview Partners.
Aspen Meridian.
Lauren’s name appeared on eleven entities.
Ethan’s appeared on only two.
Margaret’s appeared on none.
“They insulated themselves,” Aaron explained. “Lauren held the legal risk while Ethan and Margaret controlled the money through management contracts.”
“Where did the money go?” I asked.
“Some funded legitimate projects. Some covered losses. Several million moved into trusts outside the country.”
He changed the image.
A new circle appeared.
Helen Ward Family Preservation Trust.
My stomach tightened.
“What is that?”
“It was created six weeks ago.”
“I did not create it.”
Aaron displayed the documents.
My name appeared as grantor.
Lauren appeared as trustee.
The trust supposedly held two rental properties and a bank account containing more than nine hundred thousand dollars.
“I have never seen these properties.”
“We know.”
“Why use my name?”
Rachel answered.
“Because you were the next layer.”
I looked toward Diego.
He appeared as disturbed as I felt.
Aaron explained that the trust had received money from one of Lauren’s shell companies.
If investigators traced the funds, Ethan could claim Lauren had transferred them to her mother.
It would look like we had worked together.
The poor mother from Denver.
The daughter married into wealth.
Secret family enrichment hidden behind Ethan’s successful business.
“They were going to make this look like Lauren and I stole from Harbor Ridge,” I said.
Rachel nodded.
“Or that Lauren used you to hide assets.”
“Did Ethan create the trust?”
“The documents came from his office.”
“Whose signatures?”
“Yours and Lauren’s.”
I studied mine.
It was almost perfect.
But the final stroke curved upward.
I had not signed my name that way since injuring my hand nine years earlier.
“Where did he get the sample?”
Diego opened his folder.
“Your tax returns.”
I stared at him.
“How?”
“Lauren had copies.”
I remembered giving her old financial records when she helped me apply for a retirement account.
At the time, I had been grateful.
I thought marriage had not changed everything between us.
“She gave them to Ethan?”
“Possibly without understanding why.”
The door opened.
Lauren entered with a woman in a gray suit.
“My attorney,” she said.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
She sat across from me.
Rachel showed her the trust.
Lauren covered her mouth.
“I didn’t know.”
“Did you give Ethan copies of your mother’s financial records?” her attorney asked.
“Yes. Years ago.”
“For what purpose?”
“He said he could help her reorganize her retirement accounts.”
I remembered Ethan offering.
I had refused.
Apparently, he kept the documents anyway.
Lauren looked at me.
“Mom, I swear I never signed this.”
“I believe you.”
She began crying.
That answer hurt her more than blame would have.
“Why?” she asked.
“Because Ethan forged mine too.”
For weeks, Lauren had believed I was trying to expose her marriage.
May you like
Now she understood Ethan had not only used her against me emotionally.
He had tied our names together financially so that if one of us fell, the other would fall beside her.
