Chapter 1 - The Knock at the DoorThe knocking came again.

Three firm strikes.
Not the impatient tapping of a late dinner guest.
A command.
Ethan stood so quickly that his chair tipped backward.
“No one answer that.”
Every face turned toward him.
Until that moment, Lauren had been staring at the property document beside Margaret’s plate.
Her name appeared beneath a transfer involving a company called Silver Pine Holdings.
The signature looked like hers.
The address did not.
Neither did the six-million-dollar mortgage attached to it.
“Ethan,” Lauren whispered, “what is this?”
He ignored her.
Instead, he reached for his phone.
I stepped between him and the hallway.
“Do not warn anyone.”
His eyes hardened.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
Another knock sounded.
Then a man’s voice came through the door.
“Federal agents. We have a warrant.”
Margaret’s wineglass struck the table.
A thin red line spilled across the white cloth.
Ethan moved toward the back of the house.
Lauren caught his sleeve.
“Why are federal agents here?”
“Let go.”
“Answer me.”
He pulled his arm free.
“Your mother has been poisoning you against us.”
I almost admired how quickly he returned to the old strategy.
Do not answer the accusation.
Attack the person exposing it.
The front door opened.
Ethan’s younger brother, Caleb, had been standing near the entrance. He stepped aside as agents entered.
The first officer displayed identification.
“Federal Bureau of Investigation. Financial Crimes Division.”
Behind him came investigators carrying evidence cases.
A woman in a dark navy coat introduced herself as Special Agent Rachel Kim.
She looked around the dining room.
“Ethan Miller?”
Ethan did not answer.
“Margaret Miller?”
Margaret rose with offended dignity.
“This is a private family dinner.”
Rachel handed her a copy of the warrant.
“It is now a lawful search location.”
Margaret glanced at the pages.
Her expression changed at the words:
Wire fraud. Mortgage fraud. Identity theft. Money laundering. Conspiracy.
Lauren looked toward me.
“What did you do?”
“I found records carrying your name.”
“You called the FBI?”
“I hired an attorney and a private investigator. The evidence went where it needed to go.”
Her face twisted with betrayal.
“You investigated my husband behind my back?”
“I tried speaking to you.”
“You photographed documents in our home.”
“Documents using your identity.”
Ethan pointed at me.
“She is admitting to theft.”
Rachel turned toward him.
“Mr. Miller, do not interfere with the search.”
“My family’s documents were illegally obtained.”
“The warrant was not based solely on Mrs. Ward’s evidence.”
That stopped him.
Margaret looked sharply at Ethan.
“What does she mean?”
Rachel did not answer.
Agents began moving through the house.
One entered Ethan’s office.
Another photographed the laptop on the sideboard.
A third collected the property document I had placed beside Margaret’s plate.
Lauren stood motionless.
“What happens now?” she asked.
Rachel looked at her carefully.
“That depends on how much you knew.”
Lauren’s face lost all color.
“I didn’t know anything.”
Ethan laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because he had already decided what came next.
He turned toward his wife.
“Lauren, don’t say another word.”
She stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because your name is on the companies.”
The room became silent.
He had not said our names.
He had said your name.
May you like
That was the first moment Lauren understood she was not standing beside her husband.
She was standing in front of him.
