Chapter 11 - The House That Burned

The federal authorities wanted Norah in protective custody. Lucian wanted to move her to a secure property outside the state. Gideon wanted both options and a dozen armed escorts.

Norah wanted Jonah alive.

“Mara will kill him whether we cooperate or not,” she said.

Maya sat across from her in the back of the armored vehicle, her hands clenched around the strap of her bag. “She told me to bring the ledger to the Vale house.”

“The house burned down.”

“The basement didn’t.”

Lucian glanced at Norah through the partition. “We are not taking you there.”

Norah met his eyes. “Then find another way to get Jonah out.”

His jaw worked. He wanted to command her. She could see the impulse rise and die. “You will stay with Gideon.”

“I will stay where I can make decisions.”

“Norah.”

“If you want me to trust you, stop treating my courage like a security breach.”

Lucian looked away first.

The Vale house stood at the edge of a wooded neighborhood, burned fifteen years earlier and left to rot behind a sagging fence. The basement entrance was hidden beneath a sheet of corrugated metal. Norah remembered almost nothing of the fire, but the smell of wet ash pulled fragments from her memory: her mother shouting, her father’s old desk, and a red scarf lying on the kitchen floor.

Gideon found a fresh footprint near the cellar stairs. “They’re here.”

They entered through the basement in silence. Lucian stayed behind Norah until she reached the old foundation wall. A loose brick revealed a narrow compartment containing a small wooden box.

Inside was a key, a folded map, and a letter addressed to Norah.

She opened it with trembling hands.

My darling girl, the ledger is not one object. It is a chain. Each person who testified kept one link, and each link points to the next. If you are reading this, the people who hunted me have decided you are the final link. They are wrong. You are the person who can break the chain.

Norah looked at Lucian. “My mother hid this here.”

“She expected you to return.”

“She expected me to be hunted.”

A light flickered at the far end of the basement.

Jonah stumbled into view with blood on his lip and his hands bound. Maya ran to him, but a laser sight appeared across her chest.

Mara stepped from behind a support column.

She wore a dark coat and held a small remote in one hand. “The house is wired. One wrong movement and the basement collapses.”

Lucian moved slightly in front of Norah. “Let them go.”

“You still think this is a negotiation.” Mara smiled. “That was always your problem. You believed power meant choosing the outcome. Power means deciding which losses are acceptable.”

Norah studied the remote. “You don’t want the ledger.”

Mara’s eyes sharpened. “You’re cleverer than your father.”

“You want the chain broken.”

“I want every witness erased. The ledger has outlived its purpose.”

Mara pressed the remote. A deep boom shook the floor. Dust fell from the ceiling, and Gideon dragged Maya behind a concrete pillar. Lucian seized Jonah and cut his restraints with a small blade.

The basement door slammed shut above them.

“There are four charges,” Gideon shouted. “We have less than two minutes.”

Norah unfolded the map. A red line led from the basement to the old rail tunnel and ended beneath Cafe Pernell.

“This way,” she said.

Lucian caught her hand. “You’re leading us?”

“My mother built the escape.”

They ran through the tunnel as explosions thundered behind them. The ceiling cracked. Water surged through the walls. Norah held the wooden box against her chest while Lucian pushed Jonah ahead and Gideon carried Maya when her ankle gave out.

They reached the cafe cellar seconds before the tunnel collapsed.

But the original metal box from Pier Nine was gone.

On the empty shelf lay a message from Ethan.

I took the ledger to keep Mara from getting it. I did not know she had already taken someone else.

The sound of a child crying came through the cafe’s dark kitchen.
