Chapter 10 - The Son Who Was Blamed

Norah listened to the recording twice before she understood what she had heard.
The courthouse had been evacuated. Celia had escaped through the north tunnel. Elise was in federal custody, Maya and Jonah were being questioned, and Lucian stood alone in a conference room while Norah held the drive between them.
“You ordered my father’s death,” she said.
Lucian did not move. “No.”
“Your voice is on the recording.”
“That is not my voice.”
She pressed play. The audio carried the same words: Send Adrian Vale to Pier Nine. Make sure the file never leaves the building.
Lucian closed his eyes. “That was my father’s voice.”
“It sounds like you.”
“Because he wanted it to.”
He opened a locked drawer and removed a folder. Inside were old medical records, photographs, and a report from a speech specialist. Lucian’s father had suffered a stroke months before Adrian’s death. Afterward, his speech had become slurred and uneven. The recording had been digitally altered to clean the sound and deepen the pitch.
“Who altered it?” Norah asked.
“Mara Bell.”
The name struck harder than the recording.
Mara had been Lucian’s attorney for three years. She had handled the estate, the port companies, and the legal restructuring that separated Lucian’s legitimate businesses from the old criminal network. She had stood beside Norah at her wedding and cried during the vows.
“Why would she do this?”
Lucian looked at the folder. “Because she was not protecting me from my family. She was protecting my family from me.”
Gideon entered with a photograph. It showed Mara leaving the courthouse through a service exit beside Vittorio.
“She has been feeding Celia information,” Gideon said. “The false medical records, the estate breach, the photograph at the clinic. All of it went through Mara’s office.”
Norah sat down heavily. “Then why did Ethan say Celia was the one giving orders?”
“Because Celia is the public face,” Lucian replied. “Mara is the architect.”
The conference room door opened.
Vittorio Moretti entered carrying no weapon, flanked by two federal agents. His silver hair was perfectly combed, and his expensive coat showed no sign of the chaos at the courthouse.
“The agents found him leaving through the parking garage,” Gideon said.
Vittorio smiled at Lucian. “You look disappointed.”
“You used my wife.”
“I used your weaknesses. There is a difference.”
Norah stood. “Where is Mara?”
Vittorio’s gaze shifted to her stomach. “She is securing the final asset.”
Lucian moved before anyone else. An agent raised a weapon, but Gideon blocked him. Vittorio stumbled backward as Lucian seized his collar.
“What asset?” Lucian demanded.
Vittorio laughed. “The child, of course. The Moretti heir will make every surviving witness come out of hiding. With the child in our custody, they will trade the ledger for safety.”
Norah felt the room narrow around her.
“You were never trying to kill me,” she said.
Vittorio looked at her. “Not until you became inconvenient.”
Lucian released him only when Gideon forced his hands down. Federal agents dragged Vittorio away, but his words had already done their damage.
Norah turned to Lucian. “Mara has access to the medical records, the estate systems, and your business accounts.”
“I know.”
“Then she knows where we will go.”
Gideon checked his phone. The color drained from his face.
“The west residence has been breached.”
Norah’s phone rang again.
This time, the caller was Maya.
“Norah,” Maya gasped. “They took Jonah from the federal building.”
May you like
A second voice came through the line, calm and familiar.
“Bring me the original ledger,” Mara Bell said, “or your friend’s brother dies before sunrise.”
