Chapter 5 - Monday Morning Ruin

By 9:00 AM on Monday, the financial world was on fire.
The "Sterling Protocol" wasn't just a freeze on their assets; it was the unsealing of a six-month investigation my risk management team had quietly conducted. Olivia Sterling hadn’t just been snobby—she had been systematically siphoning money from her husband's charitable foundation to fund her extravagant lifestyle.
I sat in my corner office on the top floor of the Vanguard skyscraper, staring out at the city skyline. Marcus knocked on the glass door before entering, placing a thick folder on my desk.
“It’s done, Clara,” Marcus said. “The board of Sterling Corp voted unanimously to oust Ethan as CEO. Olivia has been formally indicted for wire fraud and embezzlement. Their accounts are seized.”
“Where are they?” I asked, not taking my eyes off the skyline.
“Currently residing in a two-star motel off the interstate. It was the only place that would accept their maxed-out emergency credit card.” Marcus permitted himself a rare, tight smile. “Poverty has indeed arrived, and it seems to have brought a lot of attitude.”
I opened the folder. The headlines were brutal. STERLING EMPIRE CRUMBLES OVERNIGHT. MOTHER-IN-LAW’S POOL PRANK SINKS MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR COMPANY.
I felt a brief flicker of pity, but then I remembered the look on my father’s face when Olivia mocked his calloused, grease-stained hands—hands that had worked 60-hour weeks to put me through college. The pity vanished, replaced by cold satisfaction.
“Have we secured the jobs of the lower-level employees at Sterling Corp?” I asked.
“Yes,” Marcus confirmed. “Vanguard has absorbed the operational subsidiaries. No blue-collar workers will lose their jobs because of Olivia's greed.”

“Good,” I said, closing the folder. “Let the lawyers handle the rest. I’m done with the Sterlings.”
But unfortunately, they were not done with me.
