Chapter 2 - The Unveiling

The heavy doors of the lead sedan swung open, and out stepped Marcus Vance. Marcus was known in the financial district as the kind of ruthless corporate attorney who only appeared when a multi-million dollar empire was either being built or dismantled. Today, he was here for a demolition.
Behind him, a team of eight impeccably dressed men and women filed out, carrying briefcases and tablets. They didn’t look at the extravagant floral arrangements or the whispering guests. They walked in a flawless, synchronized wedge directly toward me.
Olivia scoffed, though her voice wavered slightly. “What is the meaning of this? Security! Get these people off my property!”
Marcus stopped three feet from Olivia, adjusting his glasses. He didn’t even acknowledge her. Instead, he turned to me, bowing his head slightly. “Ms. Evans. The protocol is active. As of three minutes ago, Vanguard Holdings has frozen the Sterling Corporation’s line of credit. The board has been notified of the embezzlement evidence in the compliance package.”
A collective gasp echoed across the terrace.
Ethan lunged forward, his face flushed with panic. “Vanguard? Clara, what is he talking about? Vanguard is our primary lender. They basically own our supply chain.”
“I know,” I said, my voice eerily calm. “Because I own Vanguard.”
The silence that fell over the courtyard was so absolute you could hear the water dripping from my father’s soaked jacket. Olivia’s face lost all its color, transforming into a sickly, chalky white.
“You’re lying,” Olivia spat, though her trembling hands betrayed her. “You’re a freelance designer! You live in a rented apartment! You drive a used car!”
“I drive a used car because I like it,” I replied, stepping closer to her. “I rent an apartment because I prefer the neighborhood. And I design charity brochures because philanthropy is my passion. Vanguard Holdings is my day job. I built it from the ground up while you were busy spending your husband's shrinking inheritance to maintain an illusion of wealth.”
Ethan looked at me as if looking at a stranger. “Clara... you’re the CEO of Vanguard? The shadow backer? Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I wanted to know who you were when you thought I had nothing,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “And today, you finally showed me.”

Marcus handed me a sleek black tablet. “The paperwork for the estate foreclosure, Ms. Evans.”
I took the tablet. The "Sterling Family Estate," the very venue of our wedding, had been leveraged to the hilt for years. Vanguard held the deed.
