Chapter 4 - The Truth Revealed

Inside the warmth of the master suite, the fireplace was roaring. My parents emerged from the adjoining bathroom wearing plush, oversized robes, their wet clothes taken away to be dry-cleaned.

My father sat on the edge of a velvet sofa, rubbing his hands together. He looked around the opulent room, then up at me. “Clara... Vanguard Holdings? Are you really telling me my little girl owns the company that employs half the city?”

I sat down between them, taking both of their hands. “I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you. I didn’t want things to change between us. I didn’t want you to feel like you couldn't buy me dinner or help me fix my car anymore. And when I met Ethan...” I swallowed hard. “I wanted to be loved for who I am. Not my bank account. I’ve seen what money does to people. Look at Olivia.”

My mother squeezed my hand, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “Oh, my sweet girl. You never have to apologize to us for protecting yourself. We just wanted you to be happy.”

“I’m not mad about the money, Clara,” my dad chuckled softly, a familiar twinkle in his eye. “Though I might have let you buy me a new suit if I’d known. I am just... so incredibly proud of you. Not for the company. But for standing up for yourself out there.”

“I should have done it sooner,” I admitted, leaning my head on my mother’s shoulder. “I let her belittle you. I let him make me feel small. I was so desperate to make it work.”

“Love makes us hopeful, Clara,” my mother said softly. “But respect is what makes love last. Ethan didn’t respect you. Or us. And you saw it before it was too late.”

We sat by the fire for a long time, the chaos of the outside world completely shut away. I ordered a massive feast from the finest restaurant in the city to be delivered to the estate. We ate steak and lobster in our robes, laughing as we watched the evening news, where the "Sterling Scandal" was already breaking.

I wasn’t a helpless graphic designer anymore. I was Clara Evans. And my family would never be treated like dirt again.
