Chapter 3 - Daniel’s Version

Daniel called fourteen times.
I answered once.
My attorney, Sarah Klein, was beside me.
The call was recorded according to local legal guidance.
Daniel sounded calm.
That frightened me more than shouting.
“Rachel, we need to fix this before Lily ruins her life.”
I stared at the speakerphone.
“Her life?”
“And ours.”
Sarah wrote something on her legal pad.
I asked:
“What exactly is Lily lying about?”
Daniel paused.
Then:
“She misinterpreted discipline.”
“What discipline?”
“You know she’s always challenged me.”
“She was fourteen.”
“Old enough to know how to manipulate you.”
My hands tightened.
“Did you enter her bedroom when she asked you not to?”
Silence.
“It was my house.”
“Did you read her private messages?”
“I’m her father.”
“Did you remove her door lock?”
“Yes.”
“Did you block her from leaving arguments?”
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Did you?”
Another pause.
“I wanted her to listen.”
Sarah looked at me.
Daniel was confirming more than he realized.
Then I asked:
“Why was she afraid of you?”
His voice changed.
“She wasn’t.”
“She stepped backward when you looked at her.”
“She was performing.”
“No.”
“You’ve always taken her side.”
I almost laughed.
If only that had been true.
Daniel continued:
“This is because she has a boyfriend, isn’t it?”
I froze.
“What boyfriend?”
He stopped.
Lily had never told us she was dating anyone.
Sarah’s pen stopped too.
“How do you know about a boyfriend?”
Daniel did not answer.
“Daniel?”
Finally:
“I saw messages.”
“When?”
“Months ago.”
“On her phone?”
“Yes.”
“She changed her passcode last year.”
Silence.
Sarah wrote:
HOW DID HE ACCESS IT?
I asked.
Daniel hung up.
That afternoon, Lily checked an old tablet connected to her account.
She found something.
A device had been accessing her cloud backups.
For eleven months.
The device belonged to Daniel.
He had been reading her messages without her knowledge.
That evidence changed the situation.
Not because surveillance alone proved every part of Lily’s story.
It didn’t.
But it proved Daniel had lied.
And once a person lies about one boundary—
May you like
you stop allowing their confidence to substitute for truth.
