Chapter 8 - The Question Lily Asked MeSix months after the disclosure, Lily came into my room.

She sat on the bed.

Same room where she had tried to tell me two years earlier.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Why did you stay with Dad?”

I knew what she meant.

Not after she disclosed.

Before.

“All those years.”

I answered carefully.

“Because I loved him.”

She looked away.

“And because I thought the things that bothered me were normal marriage problems.”

“Did he scare you too?”

Sometimes.

But differently.

Daniel controlled money.

Decisions.

Schedules.

He hated being questioned.

When angry, he could fill a room without yelling.

I had spent twenty-two years adjusting around him so gradually that adjustment felt like personality.

“Yes,” I said.

Lily looked at me.

“Then why didn’t you leave?”

There were a hundred possible answers.

Mortgage.

History.

Love.

Fear.

Hope.

Denial.

None erased the effect.

“I should have looked more closely at what our home felt like.”

She nodded.

Then:

“Do you blame yourself?”

“Yes.”

“Do you blame me?”

“Never.”

“Do you hate Dad?”

I thought for a long time.

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“Really?”

“I hate what he did.”

“I hate what I failed to see.”

“But hate is not the same thing as protection.”

I touched her hand.

“I don’t need to hate him to keep you safe from him.”

Lily nodded slowly.

That night, she asked me to help remove the old bedroom door.

I stared.

“You want a new one?”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

“One with a lock.”

We went shopping the next morning.

She chose a white door.

Brass handle.

A simple lock.

Nothing dramatic.

When the carpenter finished, he handed Lily the key.

She locked the door.

Unlocked it.

Then smiled.

May you like

For most people, it was hardware.

For Lily, it was the first door in years that belonged to her.
