Chapter 4 - The Hidden Camera Was Not Where We ExpectedTwo days later, Lily asked me something strange.

“Can we check my room?”

“For what?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked embarrassed.

“Sometimes I felt watched.”

My stomach tightened.

We did not search alone.

Sarah recommended a licensed investigator who documented everything before touching anything.

Nothing was found in Lily’s room.

I almost felt relief.

Then the investigator checked the hallway.

A small camera sat inside an old smoke detector opposite Lily’s bedroom door.

Not inside her private room.

But positioned to record everyone entering and leaving.

My hands went cold.

The device had local storage.

Months of footage.

Daniel had installed it.

He later claimed it was “home security.”

But there were no similar cameras outside our bedroom.

Or the office.

Or the back entrance.

Only the corridor outside Lily’s room.

The footage showed patterns.

Daniel waiting outside her door late at night.

Daniel checking whether I had gone downstairs.

Daniel entering after Lily repeatedly told him not to.

Lily pushing the door closed.

Daniel stopping it with his hand.

No single video told the whole story.

Together, they showed something impossible to dismiss.

A pattern of control.

Sarah warned me:

“Do not turn this into a public campaign.”

I understood.

The footage went to investigators.

Not Facebook.

Not relatives.

Not Daniel’s employer.

Evidence was not revenge.

Lily deserved truth handled carefully.

That evening, my sister Victoria called.

Daniel had contacted her first.

“He says Lily is destroying the family.”

I answered:

“No.”

“Then what’s happening?”

“The family was already damaged.”

“We’re just finally looking at it.”

Victoria was silent.

Then:

“Do you believe Lily?”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

“Completely?”

“I believe she is telling me what she experienced.”

Victoria exhaled.

“Okay.”

That one word mattered.

She did not say:

But Daniel is such a good father.

She did not say:

Are you sure?

She said:

“Okay.”

Then:

“What does Lily need?”

I almost cried.

Because after years of adults asking what Daniel deserved—

someone finally asked the correct question.
