Chapter 14 - The Last VanceNathan was arrested while attempting to leave the country.

The evidence from my mother’s box connected him to her death, the intimidation network, concealed assets, and multiple acts committed on Eleanor’s behalf.

At trial, Nathan’s attorney described him as a loyal young man manipulated by a powerful woman.

The argument sounded familiar.

Every man in the Vance family had blamed Eleanor when the consequences arrived.

Nathan looked at me from the defense table.

“You think you’re different from us?” he asked during a courthouse recess.

“Yes.”

“You used the family’s money.”

“To help women escape men like you.”

“You kept the name when it benefited you.”

“I gave it back when it no longer frightened anyone.”

His expression hardened.

“Grace still carries Vance blood.”

I stepped closer.

“She carries mine.”

He smiled.

“Blood always wins.”

“No.”

I looked through the courthouse window, where Grace waited with my father and Rebecca.

“What children learn from us wins.”

Nathan was convicted.

The remaining hidden Vance assets were seized.

Part of the money went to the families of people intimidated, injured, or killed by Eleanor’s network.

Rebecca testified against Caleb and later became a permanent housing coordinator at the shelter.

She once told me she had arrived expecting to stay one night.

Instead, she stayed long enough to help dozens of other women leave safely.

Eleanor died in prison the following winter.

I felt no relief.

No grief.

Only stillness.

The last person who had ruled my childhood through fear was gone.

For the first time, the Vance name belonged only to history.
