Chapter 11 - The Woman at the Shelter DoorThree months after the maternity wing opened, a woman arrived at the shelter just before midnight.

She wore a torn gray coat and carried a baby wrapped in a kitchen towel.

Her name was Rebecca Mills.

When the receptionist asked whether she needed medical help, Rebecca shook her head and looked around the lobby.

“I need to speak to the woman who brought down the Vance family.”

I was upstairs helping Grace choose books for the children’s reading room when the call came.

By the time I reached the lobby, Rebecca was sitting beneath the plaque near the entrance.

Her eyes moved toward me.

“You’re Claire Vance.”

“I no longer use that name.”

She nodded as though that answer mattered.

“My husband worked for Richard.”

The name still had the power to tighten something inside my chest, but it no longer controlled my breathing.

“What did he do?”

“He collected debts.”

“For the company?”

Rebecca looked down at her baby.

“For Eleanor.”

She opened her coat and removed a small black notebook.

Inside were names, addresses, payment amounts, and brief instructions.

Some entries included the word PRESSURE.

Others said REMOVE WITNESS.

Rebecca’s husband had kept the notebook as protection in case the Vances ever turned against him.

After Eleanor’s arrest, he continued collecting money from people who believed the family still had power.

“He says the empire isn’t gone,” Rebecca whispered. “He says someone is rebuilding it.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why did you come here?”

Rebecca looked toward the shelter doors.

“Because last night he told me I knew too much.”

Her hands began shaking.

“And because he said women like us never really escape.”

I sat beside her.

Years earlier, those words might have frightened me.

Now they only made me angry.

“He’s wrong.”

Rebecca gave a broken laugh.

“You don’t know him.”

“No.”

I looked toward the staircase Grace and I had climbed on opening day.

“But I know what happens when frightened women begin keeping records.”

I handed the notebook to the shelter’s attorney.

Then I called the police.

The Vance empire had fallen.

But one of its shadows was still moving.
